Southern New York Division  Newsletter
January 2017

From the President
George Garland

Our Division is proud to announce our support for Dr. Abdiqafar Yasin Farah, a UN Staff Member and peacemaker with the DDR division of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia. Dr. Farah has continued his work with the UN to disengage and rehabilitate Al-Shabaab fighters even after he lost his right arm in 2006 to one of their IEDs in a suicide attack prior to working with the UN. He is on the frontlines of the battle against terrorism through non-military means.

Advocacy Alert
Visiting Our Member of Congress

Visiting members of congress is a priority this year for the United Nations Association. Each year the United Nations provides food to 90 million people in 73 countries; vaccinates 58% of the world's children, saving 2.5 million lives a year, promotes maternal health saving the lives of 30 million women a year, and so much more.

At the moment the UN is managing more complex humanitarian emergencies than ever before and as a new, reform-focused, Secretary-General is just getting to work, one thing is clear, our voice is needed now more than at any time in decades. The UNA will stand up for the UN, and the millions who depend on it. Urge your member of congress to support the UN by call or email. Find their information by clicking here.

If you would like to join a group making a local visit to your Member of Congress, contact your Chapter leaders or the SNY Division Vice President for Advocacy, Margaret Shannon, at [email protected]
