Let's Get Ready for Another

Season of Phragbusting!

We know the new year has just started, but this is the time when we also start gearing up for the upcoming summer season in Georgian Bay. It will be here before you know it!

Summer in Georgian Bay is important not just because that's the time of year when there's the most action, but because it's also the only time of year when we're really able to get to the shores and do some serious Phragbusting.

Cutting invasive Phragmites the clean natural way is only really efficiently done in the summer, when we at GBF go to the shores and cut the biomass under water level, thereby flooding the root system and preventing regrowth of this extremely persistent reed.

Why is this important?

The Downside to Invasive Phragmites

  • They grow fast and strong, effectively blocking out the growth of most of the native flora around them

  • Their walls are so dense that they obstruct shorelines from access by animals, people, and boats – their density also makes them an unsuitable habitat for the majority of wildlife

  • Their stalks can more easily catch fire than other plant life during times of drought, making them a wildfire hazard

  • Their thick, thirsty stems can alter water levels when they grow in massive quantities (which they are known to do), making them a flooding hazard

The Upside to Invasive Phragmites

  • They can be pretty sometimes

With the use of our new drone and some intensive mapping efforts, we mapped 137 new sites in 2023, and are looking forward to an even more productive summer in 2024.

So, if you're interested in volunteering this summer to help cut Phrag, or would like to learn more about our efforts, please visit our website.

When you join the circle you can choose any amount you want for a monthly donation, and in doing so, you help GBF to maximize the long-term options and capabilities of strategic planning. We like to think long-term at GBF, with the intention of keeping Georgian Bay healthy and thriving for all future generations.

Michael and Carolyn Springate chose to donate as part of the

GBay Keepers in honour of their grandkids.

“Our intent is that each child grows up not only enjoying the waters of Georgian Bay, but knowing that he or she has a responsibility for its care,

and that from a young age they have collectively

played a role in doing so.”
