Volunteer News & Updates

January 2024

NEW BEGINNINGS

As we enter this new year I am filled with hope and possibility. I look for the goodness, the joy, and the happiness in the world around me and I see it every day. It fills me with peace, purpose, and positivity. I see it in you, our treasured volunteers. Thank you for being part of that goodness, joy and happiness that makes the world more beautiful. In big and small ways your kindness makes a difference; from the smiles you share, the rides you give, the phones you answer, the people you greet, the deliveries you make, the cards you write, the visits and home assistance all bring hope and joy to others. Together, in 2024, at Senior Care Volunteer Network, we look forward to shining bright and being a beacon of light and love in our community.

With your help we are excited to leap into “Something To Talk About”, our new annual fundraiser. We invite you to join us on Thursday, February 29th, 5-9pm at The Vixen in McHenry for an evening dedicated to raising awareness and support for seniors across the county. Tell your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, golf buddies, bowling team, garden club and euchre partners. Please help us spread the word. You are our greatest ambassadors and there are so many people that have not heard about the goodness and joy we bring to the senior community.

May your new year be filled with new beginnings full of purpose and joy!

With Warm Regards,

Kerri Sutter

Transportation Coordinator

It has been a little over a year since I joined SCVN. I still remember my first few weeks and talking with a care receiver who requested a trip to her hair salon. It was December, her family was coming for Christmas. When I told her I didn’t have a driver for her trip, she thanked me for trying and she understood requests for medical appointments took priority. She started to tell me about her family visit, how long it had been since they spent the holidays together. I realized how important it was for her to look her best. I thought about how hard it must be at 88 years old, living alone with family so far away. Shortly after that call a volunteer picked up her trip. I was overjoyed and very thankful. I know our dialysis, critical and medical requests take priority, but I also know how important enriching, social and recreational activities are to our seniors. As another year begins, I want to thank you for helping our seniors with whatever their transportation needs may be. And remember, when you take a senior to a hair appointment, nail salon or perhaps visiting a spouse in rehab you are giving them the gift of “living life” and that makes life worth living. Thank you.

Winter Weather Precautions:

With the holidays, winter weather is also upon us. Above all, the safety of both our volunteers and Care Receivers is our top priority. We strongly encourage you to review our Winter Weather Guidelines to stay prepared and safe. You can access these guidelines here: https://scvnmchenrycounty.org/winter-weather-guidelines/
