Students in my classroom are working hard on reaching their reading, math, and writing goals. We are setting weekly, personal goals that are manageable, and the students are showing growth on their graphs. We have also been talking a lot about perseverance both in school and at home.

In math, students are finding out which strategies will allow them to reach their answer in the most logical way. Students are able to put their multiplication and division facts into play when solving problems. We have been implementing competitions into our lessons to create a fun and competitive drive for the students to be able to show what they have learned and also be rewarded for their correct answers.

In reading and writing, students are reading fluently and accurately at grade level. They are able to retell what they have read and write a summary using correct paragraph writing skills correctly. 6th grade book talks have presented new challenges, but students are persevering and meeting deadlines. 5th graders have been writing essays that require basic mechanics of writing and organizational skills.

We have been busy in science class!  Here are a few of the things we have been working on…

Earth Science has been learning about how the Earth formed, and the forces that shape the Earth. We just finished learning about volcanoes and are ready to learn about earthquakes!

Physical science has been learning all about the Periodic Table of Elements, and how those elements bond together to form molecules. We have learned about the properties of different bonds and materials by making bouncy balls!

AP Physics has been working hard all year, preparing for their AP exam in May. Most recently they have been working on mastering the concept of forces. They were challenged just before Thanksgiving to make towers out of Jello and other food items. This really helped them see just how important forces like friction are when making a stable structure!

The Composition I and Public Speaking students have been embracing the power of language this fall. Both of these courses earn students college credit through NICC.

Composition I students work on the writing process starting with generating ideas based on their purpose and audience, developing content, drafting, getting feedback, revising, and reflecting. Students have written scholarship essays, observations, reflections, and explanatory essays this semester. They revise and reflect on these essays and assemble them into a portfolio to showcase their learning.

Similarly, Public Speaking students have been writing informational, how-to, persuasive, and special occasions speeches, adapting their content to their purpose. They have also been setting goals and improving their delivery throughout the semester.

New Text Alert System

We have a new alert system called SchoolMessenger. In order to receive text and email alerts, registration for the 2024-2025 school year must be completed online in PowerSchool. The difference you will notice when you log in as a parent is that the previous student information is not visible. Therefore, registration is imperative for successful communication between school and parents. Reminder - only two contacts will receive texts and emails - those with “mother” and “father” relationship status. When entering cell phone numbers, please designate it as a “mobile” phone. An opt in text message will be sent before the first day of school to parents to opt in to receiving these alerts.

If the information in PowerSchool is not accurate, you will not receive these alerts.
