Dear friends,

Blessings as we begin 2020!   We have much to look forward to at St. Laurence in January including a three-day Wisdom Centre event with Matthew Fox.  We will use the 'Conversations' times on January 5 and 12 to introduce you to Matthew a bit.  He has the distinction of being thrown out of the Roman Catholic Church for focussing on Original Blessing instead of Original Sin!  He is now an Anglican/Episcopalian who has written 35 books that have been translated into 68 languages.  It is a real coup that one of the greatest theological minds of the day is coming to St. Laurence.  Many thanks to Carolyn who has made this happen.     His time with us will include

Awe and Wonder in a Secular World

However "secular" our world is becoming, one thing that is not in short demand is Awe and Wonder-especially given the news from science that our universe is two trillion galaxies large and that we are kin with all other beings in the cosmos.  What are the implications of the new cosmology to awaken us to a sense of the Sacred which derives from Awe and can inspire new ways of living on the Earth, our common home, that is suffering so deeply today?

Saturday workshop, January 18 (9:30-3:00)
Mystical Activism

How do we develop our capacities for activism that comes from a deep place of mysticism and love?  How do we awaken and nurture the creativity that invigorates activism and supports activists so they don't burn out on the one hand or take on the shadow of society such as cynicism or nihilism on the other?  Our process together will include practices as well as teachings and interaction

Sunday, January 19th Matthew will preach at the 10 am service.  Tickets are available through Kelly in the office or at www.wisdomcentre.ca
You can also learn more about Matthew here https://www.matthewfox.org/

Other highlights for the month of January are outlined in the  side-bar.   Looking ahead please note that our annual meeting will be on Sunday, February 23rd after the service.  As usual we will share lunch together after the service.    If you would like to submit anything for the annual report please get that to Kelly by January 15th.

Finally, if January weather makes you want to make summer plans, The Rev. Christine Conkin and I will be teaching a course at Sorrento Retreat Centre this July 5-11.   We teach Monday to Friday in the morning and the afternoons are for enjoying the Shuswaps.  More information will be on the Sorrento website in the next few weeks.

With every blessing,
