Happy New Year! We excitedly look forward to another year of compelling programs, great resources, and, of course, fascinating, bestselling, niche, popular, fantasy, and "whatever you're passionate about" books and media!

Save the Date!

The Rutherford Public Library Foundation Gala will take place on Saturday, March 23 at Il Villagio in Carlstadt. Attending the gala is a great way to show support for all the services the library provides. Tickets will go on sale in January.

Muslim Heritage Month Presentation

Ever wondered about the heritage and culture of the Muslim countries in the world? The luscious art, numerous inventions, serene architecture, contributions, and advancements? Join us on Monday, January 29 at 6:30pm in the auditorium for food, to chat, and to learn! There will also be an area filled with books about Muslims and by Muslim authors on the main floor of the Library!

January is National Hobby Month and also time for New Year's resolutions... here are a few places to start!

  • Creativebug, with live classes, "mixed tapes" of themed activities, videos, and resources, lets you pursue crafting hobbies such as sewing, needlework, paper crafts, painting, jewelry making, and more!
  • Genealogy - pore over national archives and local records, or tap into Ancestry.com (in library only), HeritageHub, and HeritageQuest with your library card.
  • Investing - check out ValueLine investment research
  • Cooking! Whether you're an amazing chef or just want to make a potluck recipe for the Cook A Book Club, we have many ways to get you cooking!
  • Health - The library provides access to on-demand yoga and weekly virtual meditation classes, yoga and movement classes for kids, and books and media for any fitness plan.
  • News - access the The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post online for free
  • Maybe your hobbies include history, culture, or military craft! Check out a Museum Pass to explore your hobbies or attend one of our events.

Library Mini Golf Returns March 2024

Join the Friends of the Rutherford Library for our second annual Library Mini Golf fundraiser! Businesses and community groups went all out with their designs last year and attendees had a great time! This year's going to be even better! Tickets will be on sale soon for:

  • Friday, March 1, from 6-9pm, adult night, $25/person, includes snacks and drinks.
  • Saturday, March 2, from 10:30am-3:30pm, family day, $10/family; $3/individual

Important Reminder for Parents & Caregivers

We love to see families taking advantage of all the library has to offer, and we strive to make our environment as safe as possible for visitors of all ages.

For more information, please review our Unattended Child Policy.

Start the new year with yoga, crafts, and reading to our favorite therapy dogs. We'll also be celebrating the Lunar New Year with a very special author visit on Wednesday, January 24 at 4:30pm. We welcome Hui Li, author of Scroll, who will provide an interactive reading, demonstrate Chinese calligraphy, and answer questions for our little readers.


All events meet in person unless noted. We ask that caregivers accompany young children to programs. If an event requires registration, please click the highlighted text to sign up.

Your surveys have been answered! We are thrilled to be offering "Foundations of Creative Writing," a six-week class for all levels of aspiring writers that will focus on fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. The class will be taught via Zoom and run Saturdays, 10 to 11:30am, starting January 20. We are also offering an evening adult craft, a lively lecture on George Washington, and author talks on romance, retirement, and nutrition.

Please note: It's a new year and ESL classes are back! Weekday ESL classes will resume on January 2 and Advanced ESL Saturday classes will resume on January 6.
