SHOREWOOD READS RETURNS IN 2022
|
|
Shorewood Reads invites all of Shorewood to come together as a community to discuss important topics and ideas with a shared community read. Join us in 2022 as we come together to read The Coyotes of Carthage by Wisconsin author Steven Wright and get involved with our upcoming Shorewood Reads events including a visit from author Steven Wright in April 2022!
You can find The Coyotes of Carthage digitally on the Libby app or hoopla app as an e-book or e-audiobook. You can also request a physical copy from the library via CountyCat or by giving us a call to place one on hold.

Happy New Year to you and your family.
The library team will dedicate significant time in 2022 to planning and preparing for our library renovation. I know many of you read the article in the winter issue of Shorewood Today because we have been getting quite a few questions about the renovation in the last weeks.
The most common question is whether we will have library services available during the renovation construction. The short answer is YES! The Village has granted us use of the lower level Village Center meeting room for a “mini” library. We will use the space during days and times when the room is not in use by the Senior Resource Center. We’ll have staff to check out and in your materials, a large hold shelf for your requests, a small collection of new materials, a handful of public computers and mobile printing. We will not have access to our collections in the library during construction.
The second most common question is when the renovation will take place. The construction phase of the renovation won’t happen for a year, likely starting in January 2023 and will last four to five months. This is an estimated timeline and may change, but is what we are aiming for.
If you have other questions, please stop in or email me.

FRIENDS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
|
As President of Friends of Shorewood Public Library, I love the annual meeting each December when I have the honor of naming the Volunteer of the Year, a tradition dating back many years. This year, I am so pleased to announce that McKenzie Skye Edmonds’ is the 2021 Volunteer of the Year.
Each year at the annual meeting, we also say farewell to retiring members of the board—a bittersweet moment. This year, we thanked Len Weistrop and Tricia Briceno for their service over the last three years. We also said farewell to one of the pillars of the Friends and the board - Susan Lofton who joined the board in 2013. In recognition of her commitment to the Friends and the library, we established The Susan Lofton Collection of books related to politics, civic literacy, and elections—areas of her interest and expertise as a Chief Election Inspector for the Village of Shorewood.
To learn more about McKenzie and our retiring board members, check out the Friends' blog HERE.

MORE WI-FI HOTSPOTS AVAILABLE FOR CHECKOUT
|
|
|
|
Due to high demand, we have added four additional Wi-Fi Hotspots to our collection. Wi-Fi Hotspots are small devices that create a wireless internet network, allowing you to connect your own devices and browse the internet, stream media, make video calls, and more.
Wi-Fi Hotspots are available for 21-day checkout. If you would like to check one out, stop by the front desk next time you are in the library and ask if one is available. If there aren't any available, ask a librarian to be placed on the waiting list. You can learn more about our Wi-Fi Hotspots HERE.

Cecilia Bassingthwaite is a perfect Victorian lady... lady-pirate that is. As a junior member of the Wisteria Society, an infamous group of pirate women, she is prepared to face any foe; be it her villainous pirate father, her overprotective aunt, or a charming and handsome scoundrel who may or may not be trying to kill her. So when the entire Wisteria Society is abducted, it is up to Cecilia to orchestrate their rescue and (hopefully) finally earn her place as a full member of the society. Filled with witty banter and lovable characters, this zany and fantastical Victorian romance is worth a read for fans of The Princess Bride or Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

David Sedaris’s second edition of his edited diaries does not disappoint! We join the author when his fame is going global, and follow him through book tours, travels with friends and family, several house purchases, and also the banal day-to-day such as visits to his French periodontist. Everything is fodder for hilarity in Sedaris’s hands. The final year of entries, of course, sees Sedaris newly installed in a New York apartment with first-row seats to the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice uprising that will forever sear that year in our memories. His take on both is at turns haunting and side-splitting. A joy to read.

Scott Thomas’ Kill Creek is a fresh take on the traditional haunted house story. When horror-writer Sam McGarver along with three other writers of the macabre agree to stay Halloween night at the empty, abandoned, and infamous Finch House, they encounter some strange occurrences. The next day, they leave the house, but does the Finch House leave them? That’s when the real horror begins. Told in two parts, Kill Creek employs well-rounded characters, an atmospheric setting that is like a character in its own right, and a complex plotline. I’m not going to lie – this book is too easy to visualize and it kept me up at night long after I put it down.

INFORMATION YOU CAN TRUST
|
With so many sources for information, it can be hard to sort out fact from fiction and to determine who to trust.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services webpage has up-to-date information about the COVID-19 pandemic including data about the vaccination rollout, who is eligible, and where to get a vaccine.
