January 2020 News and Updates
Greetings!
Joan Garry, a recognized leader in non-profit management, says there are five pillars that establish a thriving non-profit: people, programs, money, strategy and narrative. Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis demonstrates strength in each of those areas. As the new year begins and we look back over the one that just ended, our response to each of those necessary pillars is as follows:

Volunteers make it possible to serve hundreds for the holidays
JFCS' Hag Sameach (Happy Holidays) Program made the holiday season brighter for 718 individuals from 345 families in our community this year. That’s 181 more people than last year! Learn how hundreds of volunteers contributed their time and talents to make this happen.

Real Conversations:
Talking with your school-age children about anti-Semitism

Heilicher is proud to host this event, which will include presenters Leah Persky, JFCS Family Life Education Program Manager and Jill Kozberg, MA, LP, Licensed Psychologist and Program Manager for the Counseling Department at JFCS.

In honor of MLK Day, JFCS recognizes volunteers in our Jewish Youth Mentoring Program
By Becky Sulkin • Jewish Youth Mentoring Program Manager

Jan. 20 marked the 25th annual MLK Day of Service. At JFCS, we believe in Dr. King’s vision of serving others, as well as the Jewish value of tikkun olam (repairing the world). In observance of this national day of service, we promoted volunteering as a way for Americans to improve their communities. There is perhaps no better example of this than the work of the JFCS volunteers in our Jewish Youth Mentoring Program.

February is Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance and
Inclusion Month (JDAIM)
As part of JDAIM 2020, JFCS will co-sponsor the REEL People, Real Lives Documentary Film Series along with JFS, St. Paul JCC, and St. Paul Jewish Federation.

In the first movie in the series, a nonspeaking young man dreams of autistic civil rights. The documentary film “Deej,” with its insider view of autism, challenges us all to live inclusion.
