There are over 400 recognized dog breeds in the world. Our Newfoundlands, like many others, have historical origins dating back hundreds of years. Some people love a dog's appearance. Some people love a breed because they are from the same tiny corner of the world and they feel a kinship with the dogs of their ancestors. Some people love the temperament of a certain breed or its athletic ability. As we approach Valentine's Day, spend a minute thinking about why you love a Newfoundland, and why it is important to you to preserve our gentle giants for future generations. The NCA is dedicated to protecting and preserving the Newfoundland Dog, both in the present-day with our nation-wide rescue program, and into the future with our support of preservation breeders and cutting-edge health research. Hug your Newfoundland Valentine!

In 2023, the Newfoundland Club of America will publish an Annual of Titlists for Newfoundlands that earned titles in 2022. The owner of any dog that earned an NCA water or draft title or an AKC conformation, obedience, tracking, or agility title during 2022 may have the titlist’s picture and three-generation pedigree printed in this publication. The only restriction is that the owner or co-owner must be an NCA member. Foreign titles, including Canadian titles and non-regular designations, such as CGC, will be printed with your dog’s name; however, if your Newfoundland earned only a foreign title or non-regular designation, your dog is not eligible to be included. Copies of certificates showing your dog has earned a foreign title (or non-regular designation) must be sent to the editor, Karen Clancy, for inclusion in the database.
New this year - upload all of your dog's information and pay online! Deadline for submissions is March 31, 2023. **Please note- the online submission form is not optimized for phones.

Temperament vs. Personality
My work with dogs is primarily with Newfoundlands. I teach classes that are geared towards teaching owners how to work with their dogs, use common sense and "read" their dog's body language. Although I also teach all breed...

Why Does She Do That?
When Nokomis puts her kong in my lap, I know what she wants. She wants to play. When I am sitting at the dining room table and Ishkoodah puts her head on my thigh, I do not know exactly what she wants but I do know the two options: either she...

Puppy 101
What do you do with your puppy? What do you expect from your puppy? These are two questions that I ask puppy owners at the start of a kindergarten puppy class. Invariably I encounter a blank look. "Well, uh, I expect to housebreak him." "I expect ...

Their Future is in your Hands

We are funding a study to investigate a possible genetic test for cruciate rupture risk at the University of Wisconsin, and a study focusing on a DNA link for Subaortic Stenosis. These studies have used the available funding for the Health Challenge. Help us refill the coffers to fund follow-up and future groundbreaking studies. An investment now can mean a future of healthier Newfs for us all!

Your NCA Board of Directors recognizes the value and prevalence of social networking systems, such as Facebook™, email lists, and blogs. Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about owners, breeders, The Newfoundland Club of America and/or Newfoundland fanciers.
