We continue to hear that one of the biggest challenges in business is finding capable and skilled labor. Last year, our Annual Meeting focused on workforce development and had three excellent presentations from entities that are dedicated to workforce training, sourcing and recruitment. This year, as a follow up, we will take a close look at what our policy makers and state government are doing, what is working, what is not and what are we looking to do next. We have three key people to help us understand the challenges we all face, our demographics, laws and policies we have in place and how are we going to make it work.

For state government, Lindsay Kurrle , Secretary of the Agency of Commerce and Community Affairs, will take a close look at how policies and laws are implemented, the challenges they face and what more can be done.
For our Legislative leaders, we have Michael Sirotkin , Chair of the Senate Committee on Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs, and Michael Marcotte , Chair of the House Committee on Commerce and Economic Development.
We will learn how these committees operate, where they get their ideas and how do they vet them. For ourselves we must ask, how can we be involved in this process. What role can the business community play in affecting public policy that works to recruit qualified skilled workers to come to Vermont, stay in Vermont and make our state economically strong.
There will also be an election of the following Officers and Directors to serve on the Chamber's Board of Directors.
Individual registration is $50, a table of 8 is $350. To register, click here , call 229-5711 or email [email protected].

Vermont's tourism industry is the state's second most profitable industry and deserves a greater investment in it. This 2nd Annual Tourism Day gives Vermonters and the hospitality industry an opportunity to let legislators and other leaders know how important it is to invest in marketing Vermont as a tourist destination. Vermont's Economic Event of the Year is Here
As we enter 2020, do you have a vision for your economic future? Start the new year with the insights you need to map out your economic future. Registration for the Vermont Economic Conference closes on Wednesday, January 15. The conference will feature presentations from some of our region's leading economists. Get valuable insights into state and national trends that will help you grow your business in the coming year.
Vermont's Economic and Labor Market Information Chief, Mat Barewicz, will discuss the state's economic outlook to start the day. Gus Faucher, Senior Economist and Vice-President of PNC Financial Services Group, will then explore the national economic landscape.
Following lunch, Vermont Governor Jim Douglas will introduce the Honorable Jean Charest, former Deputy Prime Minister and Premier of Québec. Charest, one of Canada's best known political figures, initiated the negotiation for the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement and worked closely with Governor Douglas to strengthen trade relationships between Vermont, Canada, and Québec. Charest will discuss the success of this partnership in enhancing cross-border trade and commerce in business, industry, and tourism.
Registration is $150, or a group rate of four or more for $120, and includes the conference and lunch. To register, click here .
There's some new dogs in town!
A new, pop-up hot dog spot will open in Montpelier for lunch this winter.
Dawg Daze will be filling in at 32 State Street in Montpelier, the home of Chill Gelato, serving hot dogs with an elevated flair. Theo and Nora, the owners of Chill, take a break every year for the months of January through March, and this year, they have decided to sublet the space to Dawg Daze, operated by Benjamin Burr and the owners of The Woods Lodge in Northfield.
The new and exciting lunch spot will be the perfect place to get a fun, fast (yet, somewhat decadent) meal, either to take back to your workplace or home, or to eat in and enjoy the view of the river and passers-by from the window counter stools. Dawg Daze will have a casual atmosphere, with eclectic music from Ben’s personal collection and other LPs on loan from Buch Spieler, as well as the friendly, attentive service of a young and enthusiastic crew.
Filling a much needed niche in the Capitol City, Dawg Daze will offer affordable, grab and go options, with several varieties to choose from, including a totally vegan dog with home made vegan chili; their signature dog, named “The Capitol”, featuring the owners’ hometown-inspired secret sauce; and rotating weekly specials.
Dawg Daze will be open Monday-Saturday, 11am-3pm beginning on January 6, and until the last week of March, so if you’ve got a hankering for hot dogs (or you just want to check them out), stop in to sit and enjoy a gourmet dog, or take one for a walk!

New State Government Resource to Help Vermonters Address Sexual Harassment and Workplace Discrimination

Montpelier, VT — Cary Brown, Executive Director of the Vermont Commission on Women, announced new resources available today from the Workplaces For All public education program, workplacesforall.vermont.gov , to make workers, employers, and all Vermonters aware of laws that apply to them, their legal rights, methods of reporting, where to find information, strategies for prevention, and ways to address sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace.

Resources available at this new website include:
• For workers, where to get help if you’re experiencing harassment or discrimination at work — and how to support co-workers
• For employers, guidance and best practices for prevention and response, a state directory of workplace trainers, and in-depth explanations of different types of discrimination and many resources for more information
• An extensive video library featuring stories, information, and trainings
• A new guidebook, Addressing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
• Infographics, fact sheets, and Frequently Asked Questions about workplace discrimination and sexual harassment

In addition to the website, the Workplaces For All public education program includes radio and television public service announcements, social media and search engine advertising, and printed informational materials. These materials and resources have a fresh look, featuring new photography of Vermont workplaces.

The Workplaces For All campaign is a result of legislation which allocated funds to the Vermont Commission on Women (VCW), in consultation with the Vermont Attorney General’s office and the Vermont Human Rights Commission, to inform and assist workers, employers, and members of the public in preventing and addressing sexual harassment and workplace discrimination.
