Thank You Kathryn!

Joy and sorrow fill the GardenShare office. Kathryn Puleo will be transitioning to a new role at the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce this spring. This new opportunity presented itself and aligns with her long-term professional goals. As the farmers market manager for Canton, Gouverneur, and Potsdam, she was excited to take on the challenge of developing the new role within GardenShare. I’m sure she will continue to partner with and support the farmers markets and GardenShare family, and we wish her the best of luck in her new adventure. We will miss her, but feel so fortunate that we have had the opportunity to work with her and benefit from her many skills as we launched the Market Manager Coordinator model.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

It is impossible to talk about justice - in any sense of the word - without remembering the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the future he envisioned. Dr. King fought for civil rights, social justice, and equality for all. At GardenShare, we are fighting for food justice: to make real changes to the food system to ensure food security for all St. Lawrence County residents. However, if you’ve ever tried to change a system, especially one as complex and dynamic as the food system, you know that it takes time. We are grateful for the organizations that work to provide immediate assistance to our friends and neighbors, and what powerful and impactful work it is.

Alone, those efforts are not enough to combat food insecurity. It takes work from both sides: providing immediate relief AND working towards long-term solutions and systemic change.

As you celebrate the radical life and work of Dr. King on Monday, January 16, 2023, consider the ways in which you can help to address immediate need, as well as fight for systemic change.

Adirondack Food System Network Collaboration

The Adirondack Food System Network is a collaboration of multiple organizations working together as equal partners to better understand system-wide issues, identify gaps and develop realistic solutions to help strengthen and promote a more resilient food system.

The vision of the Network is an Adirondack regional food system that is resilient, just, environmentally responsible and supports improved human health. The mission is to advance innovative solutions through lasting collaboration that strengthen and improve our regional food system for individuals, the environment, and the economy. Collaboration will initially focus on connecting efforts in five areas: production, consumption, distribution, processing, and food waste management.
