While envisioning a rural community, human sex trafficking may not come to mind for many of us. However, there are several factors unique to rural areas that create vulnerabilities for trafficking. Survivors in rural areas are typically isolated, with fewer employment opportunities and a lack of services. Trafficked people are often stigmatized and frequently know their trafficker, making disclosure very difficult. Despite these challenges, there are efforts to combat human sex trafficking and exploitation in our communities, including raising awareness, building partnerships, and providing essential support services for those who experience human sex trafficking.
