| Inside CHSC - Campus News, Program Highlights | | | | Training at SCSU focuses on serving college students on the spectrum | |
Providing optimum support for adults on the spectrum who are attending college takes training. Chapel Haven Schleifer Center, Inc. was proud to partner with Southern Connecticut State University Office of Faculty Development and Center for Excellence on Autism (CESAD) on a day-long training entitled, "Cultivating Inclusivity & Belonging: Supporting Neurodivergent Students and Students with Disabilities at SCSU” on January 15, 2026.
After a welcome message from SCSU Interim Provost Julia Irwin, as well as a historical overview of autism from Dr. Fred Volkmar, Director of CEASD and Professor of Special Ed, approximately 40 SCSU faculty and staff attended the screening of the award-winning film "In a Different Key." Dr. Volkmar also serves on the Board of Directors at CHSC.
The film was followed by small group discussions co-led by CHSC and SCSU faculty. The rich conversations centered on how to build inclusive and welcoming learning environments for a wide variety of learners and included a take-away resource guide of strategies to implement in classroom settings, as well as a list of available SCSU on-campus resources.
The day also included an afternoon panel of neurodivergent SCSU students and graduates, the head of the SCSU faculty and staff neurodivergent group, and both SCSU and CHSC staff who provide supports to SCSU and other college students. We were especially thankful to have Graham H., SCSU and ASAT graduate, share his experiences and supports that led to his success in earning his bachelor’s in liberal studies with concentrations in psychology and leadership development. He’s also taken graduate level courses in counseling and is currently taking master’s level courses in human rights.
Supporting college students on the spectrum is a key part of our mission! Christy Chandler, SVP of Admissions and Marketing, and Gina Apicella, SVP of Clinical Services were proud to be a part of this collaborative effort with SCSU’s Office of Faculty Development and the Center for Excellence on Autism and look forward to additional opportunities to collaborate with SCSU and other local colleges to create inclusive environments and college success for all students.

Introducing the New Campus Life Committee
Chapel Haven is excited to announce the launch of our new Campus Life Committee, a monthly “all‑community” gathering designed to bring adults and staff together to share ideas, build connection, and help shape a positive, happy, inclusive campus experience. Alyssa Parete will be leading a multi-department team from REC, SLP, ASAT, Clinical, Senior Leadership, Operations, including staff with special ed, behaviorist, etc. backgrounds, to create a welcoming space where every voice matters and everyone has the chance to contribute to making our community the best it can be.
At the first meeting, adults and staff worked together to explore and define Chapel Haven’s core values—Diversity & Inclusion, Caring Collaboration, Integrity, and Community Connection—using an interactive activity that invited participants to share what these values mean to them. These conversations will guide future meetings as the committee continues to set expectations, strengthen community culture, and collaborate on campus‑wide initiatives.
The next Campus Life Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, February 26 at 5 p.m., All are welcome!

Milestones and Moments - Celebrating Achievements

Staff Spotlight: Celebrating Ilona Perry
We are proud to recognize Ilona Perry, Program Assistant in REACH, for truly embodying CHSC’s core value of caring collaboration.
Nominated by Kim Freeman, who writes: "Over the past few months, Ilona has jumped in numerous times to help me as a co-worker, or to support a student who might need a last minute ride to the grocery store, or just a little extra moral support and encouragement during a tough moment. Ilona approaches every-day problems with an open mind, vast experience, and a collaborative approach. She pays attention to small details and looks out for the obvious, and not so obvious, needs of our students and community members. I can’t thank Ilona enough for the ways in which she shows up every day for everyone- students and colleagues!" Congratulations Ilona!

Love Has No Limits at Chapel Haven Schleifer Center
CHSC is home to five married couples—who are thriving in relationships built on love, independence, and community support.
In a world where adults with disabilities are often underestimated when it comes to dating, marriage, and long‑term partnerships, these couples are living proof that love has no limits. We think that's worth celebrating!
Pictured above are Rich and Kim LaManna, whom met at CHSC and have been married 22 years!
Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
