#1 Hip Hop

Hip Hop Map of the Bronx. Rizzoli. New York: 2010. Single sheet, 28 by 15 ½ inches. Printed on both sides, with the reverse being the dust jacket for the book, “Born in the Bronx,” a book that documented the visual history of early hip hop. SIGNED by hip hop pioneer and legend, Coke La Rock, along with photographer Joe Conzo. The map is an older version of the New York Subway map, with 30 numbers corresponding with entries along the left side, all giving the general locations of important sites in the Bronx related to the rise and growth of hip hop. Coke La Rock was a friend and musical partner of DJ Kool Herc, and got his start rapping at Herc’s sister’s birthday party in 1973. La Rock began with giving shout outs to friend and women in the audience, gradually incorporating improvisational poetry into his raps. Joe Conzo is a photographer perhaps best known for his photos chronicling the early hip hop scene in the Bronx, largely between the years 1976 to 1984. VERY GOOD+ condition with a few tiny wrinkles. $425.00

#2 Heavy Metal, Motley Crue

(Vince Neil, Motley Crue interest). The Stepmothers Plus Rampage and Rockandi. Sat, Nov 14th Oddfellow’s hall 175 N. Los Robles, Pasadena Concert Poster. No publisher, place or date. Single sheet. Approximately 15 ½ by 10 ¼ inches. Presumed circa 1978, 1979. Nice knock off Elvis image at the bottom. A poster promoting a show for the Stepmothers, Rampage and Rockandi (Rockcandy or Rock Candy), which is, notably, the band in which a young Vince Neil got his start. According to the last.fm website, the band was formed by guitarist James Alverson. Neil was chosen to be in the band because apparently he had the longest hair in school. They got their start playing covers at a prom, and became a popular party band by playing local high school parties. GOOD condition. Old tape stains, six of them, on the reverse, with some bleed through to the front. Minor curling at the corners. One tack hole at each upper corner. Area of surface loss to the lower center edge on the front. $250.00

#3 Feminism, Sex

Koedt, Anne. The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm. New England Free Press. Boston, MA: no date, 1970. Yellow printed wraps and paper stock. 8 pp., including covers. First full length appearance of this essay debunking the myth of the vaginal orgasm. Drawing on then current studies, Koedt describes the workings of the female anatomy and the clitoris and dispels any notion of “frigidity” in women, instead asserting it is men’s view of women turning their sexual experience into some sort of pathology. This essay appeared in shorter forms in several feminist publications. Anne Koedt is a noted feminist activist and author. GOOD condition. Minor to moderate staining and soiling to the covers, with general wrinkling and creasing. $400.00

#4 Black Panthers, UC Berkeley

Various authors. Cleaver Course Position Paper. Center for Participant Education and Individuals Representing the Campus Community, Publisher. Berkeley: 1968. States October 1968 on the last page. Side folding booklet. 12 pp. A work speaking against the regents of UC Berkeley, who created rules in the Fall of 1968 that effectively barred Eldridge Cleaver, a leader in the Black Panther Party at that time, from lecturing on campus. The regents reacted to pressure from then governor, Ronald Reagan. The piece looks at the history of the board, their links to big business and desire to suppress other points of views. While Cleaver was supposed to give ten lectures, he eventually gave six, partly as a result of successful student strikes on campus. VERY GOOD condition. Minor toning, wrinkling and creasing. $125.00

#5 African Americans and Jim Crow in Sports

Goodson, Roosevelt; Sharper, Hazel; Bowie, Arthur; Wright, Liz et al. On the Ball Magazine, Inc. Summer Edition, 1960. Formerly Golf Observer and Socia World. On the Ball, Publisher. New York: 1960. Blue and orange printed wraps. 52 pp. Black and white photos throughout. First issue of this newly renamed magazine that focused primarily on African American golfers and golf, although this issue promised to cover more that just golf. On the Ball/Golf Observer was the creation of Roosevelt Goodson, who sought to promote golf to the Black community. At the time of publication, many private golf courses did not allow Blacks to play or be members of their club. The PGA had a Caucasian only clause in its bylaws from 1943 until 1961, when it was removed, reinforcing segregationist policies in the US at the time. The UGA, (United Golfers Association) was formed in 1926 to create opportunities for Black golfers in the US. This issue looks at golf fashion, tips for the golf course, mentions noted golfer Charles Sifford, contains many short news briefs, has a brief pro-Harlem piece by Rev. O.D. Dempsey, profiles baseball player Monte Irvin, etc. Rear cover with a photo of Monte Irvin and Jackie Robinson. GOOD+ condition. Minor toning, foxing and soiling to the covers. $750.00

#6 LGBTQ+, AIDS Education

S.F. Sex Resources. Queer-tested Cupid-Approved. Stop AIDS Project Handbill. Stop AIDS Project, publisher. San Francisco: no date, perhaps 1990s. Single sheet, red paper stock. Printed on both sides. 8 ½ by 5 inches. An informational handbill issued by the Stop AIDS Project in San Francisco, an organization that originally grew from research conducted by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. It was primarily focused on educating and supporting gay, bisexual and trans men in the San Francisco area, but this handbill suggests it broadened its focus, as it addresses women and the lesbian community as well. The organization was taken over by the SFAF in 2011. One side of this handbill features numbers to meetings, hotlines, support, substance abuse services, women’s services, etc. The reverse has a menu of sorts, reading “may we suggest” and suggesting the use of hot wax, honey, a variation of body surfing with massage oil, with all suggestions accompanied by guidelines that use safe sex practices. GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present. Minor wrinkling and creasing. Small spot of soiling to one side. $30.00

#7 Black Panthers, Panther 21

Black Panther Party. The People Must Free the 21! Black Panther Party, presumed publisher. No place or date. New York: no date, perhaps 1970. Single sheet, legal sized. A flier discussing the halt of the preliminary hearing of the 13 Black Panthers on trial, asserting that the reason was because the judges could not, essentially, control the narrative, and that the Black Panthers were winning in court. The Panther 21 were members of the New York Black Panther Party accused of planning attacks on New York police in 1969. They were all eventually acquitted. GOOD+ condition. Horizontal fold crease present. Minor wrinkling and creasing. $175.00

#8 Angela Davis Event Flyer

Angela Y. Davis Essayist, Scholar, Activist, Teacher, Organizer Event Flyer. (October 1, 1994). Different Light Bookstore, presumed publisher. Los Angeles: 1994. Single sheet, 8 ½ by 11 inches. A flyer promoting a book reading by Angela Davis at Plummer Park, Fiesta Hall in West Hollywood on October 1st, 1994. She was to read from her book “Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday: Black Women’s Music and Social Consciousness.” If you are not familiar with Angela Davis, as the flyer notes, she is known “for her ongoing contributions to the movement for racial equality, women’s rights and world peace.” VERY GOOD condition. Minor wrinkling and curling along the right edge. $55.00

#9 ABC Book Satire, Patent Medicine

No author given. ABC of Society. Hunt’s Remedy promotional Alphabet Book. Hunt’s Remedy Co., publisher. Providence, RI: no date, 1883. Color illustrated wraps. 56 pp. Black and white illustrations throughout. A promotional booklet that satirizes high society and culture through the use of the alphabet book trope, loosely following a young man and woman and their path to marriage. All this accompanied by testimonials and promotional copy touting “the best” kidney and liver medicine produced by Hunt’s Remedy Company. FAIR condition. Rear cover almost detached from the rest of the piece, with some splitting along the front hinge as well. Both locales with associated chipping, tearing and creasing. A medium chip/tear at the lower center rear cover edge. Minor staining and address stamp on the rear cover. Minor toning. Very minor foxing in the interior. $100.00

#10 African American Fraternal Association

[African American] Stewart, H.A. READ!! Don’t Throw Me Away! Paramount Progressive Order of Moose Promotional Handbill. Paramount Progressive Order of Moose, Publisher. St. Louis, MO: no date, perhaps circa 1922. Single sheet, 6 by 4 inches. Small piece that looks like it was to have been folded into a 4 page booklet, although this is unfolded. A promotional piece issued by the Paramount Progressive Order of Moose, an African American fraternal organization very similar to the Loyal Order of Moose. The Loyal Order of Moose did not allow African Americans into their organization, so this, and other similar organizations, were founded to serve the needs of African Americans. The Paramount Progressive Order of Moose appears to have ceased operations by the early 1930s, perhaps partly due to lawsuits it faced from the Loyal Order of Moose for its use of their imagery. This piece discusses helping those in financial need with housing through dues, as well as indicating the group offered free medical aid. GOOD condition. Heavy scattered foxing and creasing. Several small tears along the edges. $125.00
