 The period parlor at our historic Doc Thomas House headquarters is transformed into a compelling
art gallery as
artist Sarah A. Wilkinson presents her photography exhibit titled "Troubled Waters: Birds in Peril." The collection of images focuses on humanity's impact on our natural environment and its inhabitants, birds in particular. By documenting reduced wetlands and struggling species, Wilkinson captures unfolding crises through her studied and sensitive eye. From hauntingly beautiful to heartbreaking, her images blur the boundaries between
art, landscape and nature.
Born in Scotland and residing in Miami, the British landscape architect,
artist and photographer looks to our natural and manmade environments for inspiration, resulting in a closer examination of how we impact our environment and it impacts us.
Art Nite also features our ever-popular Donation Bird Bar.
"Troubled Waters: Birds in Peril" will hang through January in our recently designated "Florida Heritage Site" 1932 cottage. For a private appointment to view the exhibit, please contact

The State of Florida is attempting to take back one of America's National Wildlife Refuges: The Arthur R. Marshall
Loxahatchee
National Wildlife Refuge in Palm Beach County. This enchanting sanctuary provides critical habitat to 250 species of birds -- including the Everglades' largest wading bird colony -- and hosts more than 7,000 active nests.
In a move that has long been encouraged by the state's powerful sugar industry, Florida has begun the process of evicting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from the site. If successful, their eviction will eliminate federal wildlife protections on the 144,000 - acre refuge, which presently embodies one of the last remnants of the historic Everglades.

2017 could well decide if this Richmond Pine Rocklands remnant will be bulldozed, paved and developed to the everlasting detriment of the dozens of rare endangered and threatened plants and animals that live there.
The members of Miami Pine Rocklands Coalition (
MPRC) invite you to join them at Tropical Audubon Society to learn if Miami-Dade County is poised to green-light this potentially devastating development deal.

The Culture & Politics of Water in the Everglades

An
AIRIE-curated photographic and ethnographic exhibition titled "Getting the Water Right: The Culture and Politics of Water in the Everglades" will be on display at site-specific locations throughout Everglades National Park from
January 15 through June 1. The collaboration between internationally acclaimed photographer Adam Nadel and UCLA anthropologist Jessica Cattelino, visually and textually explores the interplay of ecological, social and cultural processes in one of the world's most iconic and imperiled wetlands ecosystems.
Visitors will variously encounter these images in the Earnest F. Coe Visitor Center Presentation Room,* at the historic Flamingo gas station, Shark Valley, along boardwalks and in other creative sites throughout the park. On mobile phones, visitors can experience an audio component featuring the voices of Everglades residents, short audio essays, and curated sounds.

Night educational series staged 2-3 times per year at Pinecrest Gardens. Prior to the
film, TAS board member, birder and educator Brian Rapoza will engage with attendees to illustrate the connection between dinosaurs and their feathered avian relatives.
Other
interactive educational tabling activities will also take place, and refreshments for purchase will be offered. The evening promises to be fun and illuminating for families and inquisitive minds of every age.

Yes, it's finally that time of year! ConCon is back with Take Sixx inaugurating the 2017 Conservation Concert season! The band returns to the Doc Thomas House Keystone Stage for the eighth year running. Recently, the guys welcomed a new lead singer, Samantha "Sam-Jam" Bowen, whose exciting vocals and remarkable range have expanded Take Sixx's already-fabulous repertoire of classic and contemporary hits.
Also on the playbill:
Dim Ssäm à Go Go Food Truck; and the ever-popular donation Bird Bar featuring wines courtesy of Republic National Distributing Co. and local craft beer compliments of Miami Brewing Company.

Learn More: Inaugurated in 2010 by Nightscape (now morphed into Take Sixx) the ConCon series was born of the need to finance needed repairs to the historic Doc Thomas House, recently name a Florida Heritage Site. Net ConCon proceeds have also funded restoration of the property's iconic chickee hut and installation of an outdoor kitchen, both of which are put to use for educational seminars, scout meetings, weddings, birthdays and the biannual dinner party fund-raisers known as "Walk in the Woods with Wine & Whisk."
