Dear Team,
Happy New Year! As we kick off 2021, we are thinking about a fresh start. It’s a new year, and while this brings new challenges, it is a new beginning.
Our focus this month is togetherness and hope. Check out this article on diversity and inclusion that we’re reading this month. Benefits of diversity and inclusion at work include: a bigger talent pool, increased employee engagement and trust, new perspectives and innovation, better decision making, improved performance, and stronger business results.
- Challenge our unconscious bias
- Use inclusive language
- Check our social media activity
- Build a mentoring community
- Create cultural events
We are committed to modeling and supporting these efforts. Our goal is that each of you feels valued and supported to do your best work. A culture that fosters a diverse range of beliefs and values makes all of us better.
Happy 2021!

Department of Pediatrics Holiday Party & Tacky Sweater Contest
|
|
Congrats to Candy Hudspeth, winner of the contest!
|
|
We hosted a tacky sweater contest and had a goody bag pickup for faculty and staff. The bags were filled with snacks and fun things to be used during our virtual holiday party. We had a blast!
|
|
We hosted our first ever virtual holiday party! The party featured department superlatives, Dr. Nataro's band "Trick Dawg" played some songs, Dr. Kellam's family sang a carol, and Bo, the UVA therapy dog, made an appearance. Cheers!

Seasons Treatings Success
THANK YOU to everyone that volunteered their time to support this year's toy drive. Your donations, gift wrapping skills, and cheery delivery to patients made this event amazing. We couldn't do it without you!
Special shout out to Arun James, Respiratory Therapist, who came in on his day off to take pictures for us.

Thank You, Colleagues!
I spoke at a faculty meeting about two months ago telling you about an initiative being undertaken through our Pediatrics clinic. There is a group of 6 of us who have worked to create a partnership with Local Food Hub, a not for profit that works with local farmers to deliver fresh healthy food to people who have food insecurity.
I am pleased to say that we have raised over $9000 so far. Because of your generosity, we are able to start the program earlier than expected. We have identified six families so far and they will receive their first delivery of food this upcoming week.
Foods our patients and their families will be receiving include 1 dozen eggs, red beets, curly kale, salad mix, fuji apples, sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, Gaona Granola, and Abuela Isabella's (handmade natural granola, made by a woman-run business in Charlottesville).
Thank you for your support! This is a great program that supports a local not for profit, local farms and local families.
