WASHINGTON STATE PTSA

2019 Golden Acorn Award*  -- Melanie Pang
Melanie Pang

2019 Outstanding Educator Award* -- Stephen Gehrig

2020 Outstanding Educator Award -- Lynda Hurley

WOLVERINE GUARD 2020-21

wolverineguard@bellevuehighptsa.com

BHS Boys Lacrosse
Comments and thoughts shared by Head Coach Nick Welton and his staff

Joby Schneider

Joby Schneider, like his older brother before him, is an absolute animal and one of our top 3 Schneider brothers. Joby is the best defensive midfielder that I've ever seen. Fast, tough, strong, and loud, Joby is a coach's dream. Constantly pushing himself and his teammates during practice, Joby is a tone setter. The only problem with coaching Joby is that during 6 on 6, we had to make a special rule that Joby had to clear the ball around players instead of running them over - something that in all of our years of coaching we've literally never had to say.  Joby is a pure athlete and a true Bellevue Wolverine. His blue collar work ethic, jarring hits, and quick smile will be irreplaceable in the years to come...or until his younger brother makes varsity ;). Joby, we are so happy you joined us for the 2020 season. You bring such a positive attitude to everyone around you. Keep making people smile and setting the bar for excellence. We can't wait to see what the world has in store for you!

Tyler Smith

"Speak softly and carry a big stick." 2020 Captain, Tyler Smith, carries himself in Teddy Roosevelt style on the lacrosse field. He speaks volumes with his tenacious play and confident demeanor. Early on, he we knew he was wrestling with the high expectations he had for himself. However, over time he really leaned in and embraced his role as a leader on and off the field. Teammates and coaches look to Tyler as the cornerstone of the close defensive unit. He has experience playing against the most formidable of teams and making high level plays in the process. We love watching you play: creating GBs, getting that ball back off the ground, and making smooth transition plays. What many people don't know is how good you are with a short stick... maybe you'll have to show them in our next alumni game! Tyler, your ability to take challenges as they come and keep moving forward is your secret weapon. You have such a positive outlook on life! Keep inspiring an attitude of gratitude in those around you. We can't wait to see what adventures lie ahead.

Cash Stocks

Cash Stocks is metal. He has successfully held his own against some of the best players in the country. What's even more impressive about this? He started playing lacrosse in high school! The first time meeting Cash, we immediately observed his drive to be the best lacrosse player he could possibly be. He never let that drive fade despite having such high expectations for himself. We knew his journey would be a lot of work but Cash was up for the challenge. With incredible self-awareness, he worked diligently and took hard-to-hear feedback to heart. Cash trusted the process, put in lots of work outside of practice, and landed as a strong contributor on the varsity defensive lineup. Above all else, Cash never lost sight of being a great person and teammate. Cash, we're so proud of how far you have come as a lacrosse player and person. Your dedication and passion made it happen! We're confident that if you remain self-aware and pursue anything like you've pursued lacrosse, you will find great success!

BHS Boys Javalin/Track & Field
Words and Memories Shared by Assistant Track & Field Coach, Tom Ellis

Jeff Kapioski - Jeff is my top returning 4 year boy's javelin thrower this year.  It has been a lot of fun to watch him grow and develop over the past 4 years both as an athlete and as a person.  This was going to be Jeff's big season.  He had been spending more time in the off-season lifting weights and doing other practicing on his own, and was looking forward to some big improvements this year in both the javelin and the discus.  Jeff has always been ready to take instruction and would seek me out to ask questions and to get feedback on his technique.  He also was taking on the role as a leader in the jav group, helping out with some of the new throwers and just generally helping out at practice.  I could always count on Jeff to be willing to not only help with the new throwers, but to do the boring jobs like going to the upper field and unlocking the gates so we could get practice started early, or helping return extra spears or discs to the shed.  I'm going to miss having Jeff around at practice, he has been an excellent example to the other kids of what a responsible teammate should be, and I hope that he takes the same attitude with him as he moves on to his next adventure.

Henry Hawblitzel - Henry was our top returning thrower in the shot put and discus, but I am including him with the javelin throwers because he also spent some time throwing the spear.  Though he is also a 4 year thrower he spent most of his time with the shot and discus, so I have not had as much time to get to know him as many of the javelin throwers.  He clearly was ready to take over as the "big dog" among the shot and discus throwers as a senior and the top thrower.  In our rather truncated season this year I noticed that he was taking his role as the leader of the shot and discus throwers seriously, and I think he would have had a very successful senior season.

Ahmin Chang - Ahmin spent his freshman year as a sprinter and hurdler but in his sophomore year he discovered the superior world of the throwers and gave up the sprints to join us.  His best event is the javelin, but he also competed in the shot put and discus.  Ahmin was someone who would get to practice on time and be ready to get down to business.  He would check in with me whenever he needed help, but otherwise he'd work persistently on what he had been shown until he felt he had it down, and then he'd come to me and ask for more feedback.  His attitude was always positive even when he was having trouble mastering a new point of technique, a trait which should serve him very well in his future life.

Justin Tham - Justin is another jav thrower who came to us late, spending his first two seasons as a sprinter.  He joined the javelin group last year as a junior, but continued to split time with the sprints so I did not see him a lot at practice and he only competed in a few meets.  When he was with the jav group he always demonstrated that he was ready to work hard to learn how to throw, even though he quickly discovered that throwing a javelin is a lot harder than it looks!  But he stuck with it, and as a senior if he had maintained his work habits (and maybe spent less time with the runners) I think he could have continued to develop his throwing skills and become a competitive thrower.

Billy To - Billy did not start track until his junior year, but started right in with the javelin and was extremely enthusiastic from the beginning.  He worked hard on the field trying to learn correct throwing technique, and also was a hard worker in the weight room both during the season and in the off-season this past winter.  Billy is very outgoing and was always helping out with things that many of the other kids just didn't think about, like making sure that all of the javelins were collected at the end of practice and returned to the shed, even if he was carrying someone else's jav as well as his own.  In our short time this season Billy showed that he was ready to be a leader among the throwers.  His attitude and good nature were both inspiring and contagious; I could never spend time with Billy without smiling, and I'm really going to miss having him as a part of the group.  I had high hopes that as a second year thrower that Billy would iron out his technique and become a more competitive thrower.  I'm sure that with Billy's attitude that he will be successful as he moves on to college, and I'll look forward to having him come back to visit us next year.

Go Bellevue!!! Be well....
2020 BHS Band

Thoughts and memories shared by Edd George and Will Harvey, Co Band Directors;

Yujin Lee

Yujin has played Saxophone and Clarinet in Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. In rehearsals he shares helpful critiques and advice, it is clear that he cares a great deal about music and his peers. Next fall he is planning to continue playing saxophone in the USC Trojan Marching Band, along with Matt.

Matt Rizen

Matt is one of our Drum Majors, as well as playing Saxophone in Jazz Band and Bass Clarinet in Wind Ensemble. Matt has brought great energy, leadership and musicality to our band program. If it's a late night marching practice, or an early morning jazz rehearsal, Matt is ready to give his all. Next fall he is planning to continue playing saxophone in the USC Trojan Marching Band, along with Yujin.

Brennan Dury

Brennan is one of the section leaders of our Marching Band Trumpet section, and plays in Wind Ensemble. Brennan is a clutch player who holds himself to high standards, and that spreads to those around him. He is planning on attending the University of Washington to study Computer Science.

Jeff Kapioski

Jeff plays Tenor Sax in Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. He was one of the Tenor Sax Section leaders, and has helped to make Marching Band fun for those around him while being productive as well. Jeff is a friendly and positive, traits that he will take with him next year at Bellevue College and beyond!

Tyler Combs

Tyler has played Trumpet, Euphonium and even sings in Choir! Tyler has shown great leadership through his 4 years in band, being nurturing to younger students, being hyped up for Pep Band, being a role model, and making rehearsals fun. Tyler had made the Bellevue Band a better place! Next year Tyler is taking a GAP year to work and travel.

Kaatje Justus

Kaatje plays Bassoon in Wind Ensemble and Tenor Sax in Marching Band. Kaatje is an amazing musician and leader. We have enjoyed seeing her develop as a musician and a leader. She cares deeply about her peers and she is well liked in return. Next year she is planning to continue to play Bassoon at Wheaton College.

Introduction to Trading and Investing

Are you interested in stock-trading or investing? Or have you ever heard your friends or family speak about the financial markets without a clue in what they're talking about? If so, I have a great opportunity to provide you. This summer, I will be teaching an introductory course for trading and investing.

This course will teach you all the basics to trading and investing. We will have a broad focus on multiple personal/corporate finance topics. Becoming financially literate is one of the single-most important standards for becoming successful in the United States, period.

For the majority of the course, we will be focusing on analytical strategies for stocks. Of course, there is a variety of other financial instruments and systems including options, Foreign Exchange trading (Forex), and more, but we will have a primary focus on stocks.

With many online courses offered by famous Universities and Financial institutions, most, if not all of them, saturate most of their material with an academic perspective on finance with a lesser focus on practical information... For example, most courses will focus on the date, location, and process by which a financial instrument was invented, and have a minimal focus on its practical function and how to trade it! I am not discrediting any such financial courses, but if you want straightforward and practical information, you are going down the right path by signing up for this course!

These are some of the topics that we will be covering in the course:

  • The dynamics of the financial markets.
  • Technical & Fundamental analysis
  • Chart Analysis
  • Statistics
  • The best strategies for entry/exit on a stock.
  • Basics of money management
  • Your style (swing/day-trader, etc.)
  • Engaging in Entrepreneurial pursuits through investing
  • Finding useful & relevant financial information.
  • Mental fortitude
Sign-up here to get started: https://tinyurl.com/ybvh3m57

Lessons will all be from 10:30am-11:15am on the following dates (all Mondays):

  • June 22nd
  • June 29th
  • July 6th
  • July 13th
  • July 20th
  • July 26th

(Online meeting links + handouts will be distributed via email and you may be notified by text)

If you have any scheduling conflicts, contact me via email or text and we can create arrangements. I will have lecture recordings available for you as well and will post on YouTube for better accessibility in the future!

Thank you so much for your time, and I hope to see you at our first meeting on the 22nd!
