Message From Debbie
September 21st: United Nations International Day of Peace
An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live. - Dr. Maria Montessori
Each year, Jarrow celebrates, along with thousands of Montessori Schools around the world, the International Day of Peace. As an accredited Montessori School, Jarrow believes and practices:
“A commitment to basic human rights such as freedom, dignity, safety, equitable treatment, and a standard of living adequate for health and well-being drive the Montessori commitment to education for peace and social justice. By creating respectful, inclusive classrooms, celebrating diversity in all its forms, crossing cultural boundaries, and modeling engaged citizenry, Montessori educators nurture students who will transform the world and make it a better place for their generation and the generations that follow.” - American Montessori Association
Our teachers foster, model and help children develop the vocabulary and communication skills within the framework of peace education by establishing a positive classroom atmosphere in which children work together in cooperative ways. Montessori teachers believe that a peaceful classroom helps to facilitate and instill attitudes, values, and knowledge that promote peace and non-violence though cooperative learning, conflict resolution, structured controversy, and school mediation in an effort to create a peaceful school environment. Our aspiration for our students when they graduate is that they take these skills and beliefs into the world, and are leaders in social justice.
Our Elementary classrooms' weekly structured peace council meetings are an example of how these ideas are applied. Peace council meetins allow children to voice their opinions, discuss conflicts or misunderstandings that might have arisen during the week, and come to a resolution that works for the individual and classroom community.
An effective way to focus children’s attention of cooperation is for each classroom from Primary through Upper Elementary to create a Peace Promise, which all the children in each class agree to uphold. Their participation in creating a value and behavior driven document provides an opportunity for discussion, and is a means for each student to hold themselves accountable for their own behavior.

Next Monday, our Primary through Elementary students will meet in their class pods. Each class will bring their class promises to share. Usually, the children share their promises with the entire school, but I will ensure that I hear from each class to formalize this commitment ceremony, myself. Pictures will be shared in next week's Jarrow Journal, so stay tuned.

COVID Update & Illness Info
Note on illness as we come into flu season:
The CDC recommends people 6 months of age and older receive their flu shot in late September or October. Receiving the shot too early (August or early September) is not encouraged as the antibodies created during the immune response might fall as the flu season wears on, potentially leaving a person with a lower antibody count later during flu season. Here are some links that may be helpful:
A reminder: For cases in which a communicable disease has been confirmed by a doctor, classroom parents will be notified of the illness. HIPPA privacy laws require that individuals not be disclosed. The only time a name will be shared are cases in which the health department needs to follow up for the purposes of COVID contact tracing.

Staff Introductions:
Jarrow's Prime Primary Team!

Diana Vilar, Sequoia Lead
Favorite Animal: I love bears; they are so impressive, majestic and huge! I used to have a bear visit my house every night at exactly 3:03am. This occurred for nearly 3 weeks back in 2013. I would set my alarm just to see it from my window.
Fun Fact: I love to travel! The past three years, I lived in the jungle of Gamboa in Panama, where I fed monkeys bananas every morning. The sloths were also so pretty, and of course, really slow
What I Love about Jarrow: The environment is perfectly set up to provide happiness and fun for the children. Is a gift to see them smiling and growing up in a place full of joy and fun learning experiences.

Favorite Animal: I don’t have a favorite, but I love cats! I feel very peaceful and calm when I am around them.
Fun Fact: My daughter has been a competitive rock climber since she was 7 years old. This is why, 5 years ago, my family and I left our home of 28 years in Santa Cruz, CA, my job of 15 years in a Montessori school and moved to Boulder so our daughter could join the ABC climbing elite team. Worth it?Absolutely!
What I Love about Jarrow: The beautiful campus and the nice supportive families that I have met throughout my years of working here.

Cara Watts, Maple Lead
Favorite Animal: Cats. I have always felt a special bond with cats and I have always had a cat in my house.
Fun Fact: I love to learn all I can about flowers and plants so when I am in nature I know what is around me. I sometimes even pick flowers to take home and make tea from them.
What I Love about Jarrow: How nice everyone is and how wonderful it has been getting to know everyone in the Jarrow Community.

Favorite Animal: The hummingbird. I recently moved into a new home. The first week, a female hummingbird came to the balcony door and looked through the window, as if to say, “Welcome to the neighborhood. Looking forward to the yummy food you will surely provide.” I hung salvias around the balcony- eye candy for me, and nectar for her. Her beauty, grace, and resilience bring joy to my heart.
Fun Fact: As a child I spent summers on my grandparents’ pig farm in Cheraw, Colorado where I was a pig wrangler and midwife.
What I Love about Jarrow: The students, families and staff; all come together to make Jarrow the beautiful garden of learning that it is.
|
|
Pati Mezarina , Aspen Lead
Favorite Animal: The tiger, because of its observant eyes and patience.
Fun Fact: I come from a family of lawyers, and was very close to becoming an international lawyer, myself.
What I Love about Jarrow: The children and how fortunate I feel to be able to teach them.
|
|
Christopher Collins , Aspen Assistant
Favorite Animal: Elephants. They are incredibly intelligent, have extensive family bonds, and can "hear" vibrations from miles away in their feet!
Fun Fact: I have been choreographing dances for 10 years, although only have 3 videos! In my free time, I enjoy archery and gardening.
What I Love about Jarrow: The natural love for learning that is nurtured everyday by the staff and children!
