JCU PRESIDENT DR. LESTER C. NEWMAN ANNOUNCES PLANS TO RETIRE IN JUNE 2023
After a successful 47-year career in higher education, Jarvis Christian University President Dr. Lester C. Newman, 71, has announced his intention to retire June 30, 2023. Plans are underway for a President's Spring Concert on April 20 and a Black-tie Optional President's Retirement Celebration on April 21. (See notices below.)

BOARD OF TRUSTEES NAMES DR. GLENELL M. LEE-PRUITT PRESIDENT DESIGNATED CANDIDATE
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt is the
designated candidate to replace Dr. Newman for president of Jarvis Christian University upon his retirement in June. Dr. Lee-Pruitt was selected by the Board of Trustees following succession planning training that has been in place since 2016. The Transition Committee has vetted her and presented her to faculty, staff, students and the public to share her vision for the future.
INTERNATIONAL WEEK KICKS OFF WITH FLAGS IN PROCESSIONAL AROUND CAMPUS
International Week at Jarvis was March 27 through 31 with a host of activities to celebrate faculty, staff, students from 47 countries.
JARVIS CELEBRATES 111TH ANNIVERSARY WITH FOUNDERS/HOMECOMING EVENTS
JCU's 111th Anniversary and Founders/Homecoming March 20-26 in Hawkins featured a wide array of events to celebrate, including Convocation speaker the Rev. Cynthia Hale, a gospel concert, and the annual Pioneer Hall of Fame and Preeminence Awards Gala Friday night which featured comedian Shed G. and D.J. Monae with musical performances by R & B artist Yung Vocalz and the legendary ZAPP BAND headlining the black tie optional event. Learn more here.
JCU WELCOMES 'THE BIG HOMECOMING' 365 IMPACT TO CAMPUS WITH WELLS FARGO AND CELEBRITIES
The Big Homecoming 365 Impact Tour in partnership with Wells Fargo visited JCU Tuesday, March 21, during the university’s 111th Founder’s Homecoming Week to authentically celebrate the culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Students heard from Grammy award winning entertainment executive Amir Windom, singer/actor Reed Shannon, and actor/philanthropist Lamman Rucker (pictured above left). Learn more here. JCU WELCOMES DR. LEONARD L.HAYNES, III, PHD, 
FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH CHAPEL SPEAKER
Dr. Leonard L. Haynes , a former senior director at the Department of Education, a former HBCU president and a former executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities was the Black History Month chapel speaker February 21. Dr. Haynes possesses a combination of policy and practical experience to strengthen support of HBCUs and the students they serve. Learn more here.
Jarvis Christian University has expanded educational opportunities to public city, county and government employees through its new "Opportunity Scholarships" offered in the greater Dallas and Fort Worth areas. Public employees can complete their undergraduate degrees in business administration and criminal justice at the university’s Dallas Teaching Site at 7222 South Westmorland, Suite 250.
JCU STUDENTS ATTEND CLINTON EVENT IN NASHVILLE
Jarvis Christian University students recently returned from doing volunteer work with the Clinton Global Initiative University annual conference in Nashville. Jarvis students met with former President Clinton and his family. JCU junior Jhavier' Law was featured on local news about the event. The group visited the Clinton Library in Little Rock. TEXAS WORKFORCE COMMISSIONER AARON DEMERSON VISITS JCU
Texas Workforce Commissioner Aaron Demerson discussed workforce development in East Texas during his first visit to Jarvis Christian University on February 15. He met with local small business owners and discussed education and training needs to advance a skilled workforce to help East Texas grow and thrive. Learn more here.
COMMUNITY GATHERS TO HONOR MLK AT
UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY PRAYER BREAKFAST
Community members from around Wood County came together with Jarvis Christian University Saturday, January 14, to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a catered prayer breakfast. Local pastors prayed for unity and for specific local needs written on prayer cards, the Jarvis choir performed, and a Jarvis student sketched a likeness of Dr. King during the program. Representatives were on hand from Circle M Crawfish Restaurant and the JCU Denton/Collin County Alumni Association Chapter to receive Community Unity Appreciation Awards for their outstanding service to JCU.
During the prayer breakfast, junior JCU student Jhavier' Law sketched a portrait of MLK on a blank canvas.
JARVIS WELCOMES GRADUATE STUDENTS IN BUSINESS AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN 2023
Jarvis Christian University's new graduate programs began in January welcoming Jarvis' first-ever graduate students. The two new master's degree programs include an MBA and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice. Both programs are already enrolling for the next semester. JCU HONORS CONVOCATION FEATURES
DR. LAWRENCE MOREHOUSE
Jarvis Christian University will host its Honors Convocation Tuesday, April 11, featuring guest speaker, Dr. Lawrence Morehouse, president and CEO of Florida Education Fund (FEF). Founded in 1984, FEF is a nonprofit that seeks to create and implement programs that lead to greater educational advancement for historically underrepresented groups.
JCU COMMENCEMENT SLATED FOR SATURDAY, MAY 6
The 2023 Commencement Ceremony for Jarvis Christian University will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 6, in the Anthony Robinson Varsity Gymnasium in the E. W. Rand Center, with President Lester C. Newman presiding over the ceremony. Keynote speaker will be actor/philanthropist Dr. Lamman Rucker.
DR. LAMMAN RUCKER TO PROVIDE KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT JARVIS COMMENCEMENT

Actor and philanthropist Dr. Lamman Rucker, began his career on the daytime soap operas “All My Children” and “As the World Turns” before roles in Tyler Perry’s films, “Why Did I get Married” and “Why Did I Get Married Too?” Rucker also starred as Jacob Greenleaf in the Oprah Winfrey Network drama series, “Greenleaf.” He currently stars in the BET+ drama titled “The Black Hamptons.”
