Jason Homer Showcases Exceptional Talent, Prime Suspect Romps Again

Most people consider trainer stats and percentages when they’re handicapping a race, but numbers never tell the full story.

One sign of a better-than-average trainer is when horses give their best every time they’re in a race. This requires not only physical preparation, but also mental conditioning. The best trainers instill a will to win in their horses. There’s also an art to preparing a horse to win first-time out.

Trainer Jason Homer covered all the above this week when he turned loose two first-time starters, Misspennymischief (8-1) and Sum Up the Silver (26-1), to finish 1-2 in the second race on Tuesday. And just to prove it wasn’t a fluke, he came right back and did it even better on Wednesday.

A Snapshot in Time by Bob Gates

This week, we close out our look at thoroughbreds from the 1970s with the dark bay gelding Affront. He is pictured during his two-year-old season on September 22, 1979, for trainer Harry Gumprich. Mr. and Mrs. Gumprich are on the left with Downs PR representative John Matheson, son of Tribune scribe Jack Matheson. Standing at the rear of Affront is my old pal — horseman, curler and numbers guy — Gary Gumprich. The $4,500 yearling purchase won three of his six starts as a two-year-old. (Gerry Hart photo)

Belmont Stakes Cheat Sheet

The 2026 Belmont will not lack for star power as the top two finishers in the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford ReserveGolden Tempo and Renegade – are slated for a rematch.

Those two stars will compete against a handful of other Derby starters along with some new shooters in what should be a good betting race and an important one in determining the top-rated horses in the 3-year-old division heading into summer.

BloodHorse handicapper J. Keeler Johnson makes his case for Hall of Fame (6-1) in this Saturday's Blame Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Will Hall of Fame Upset in Blame Stakes?

One of the best races taking place on the final weekend in May is Saturday's $300,000 Blame Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, a 1 1/8-mile dirt event for older horses that serves as a local stepping stone to next month's Stephen Foster (G1).

The eight-horse field includes a couple of Grade/Group 1 winners: #3 Hit Show (5-2) and #1 Rattle N Roll (4-1), but neither can be viewed as a certain winner in this competitive field.

Jokestar, trained by Kevin Attard, will look to earn his first graded stakes victory in Saturday’s $175,000 bet365 Eclipse Stakes (G2) at Woodbine, and Awesome Bourbon, trained by Abraham Katryan, takes on seven foes in the $150,000 Jacques Cartier (G3), a 6-furlong main track event for four-year-olds and upwards.

Bob's Blog

On April 27, 2016, the master of K5 Stables passed away. Can you believe that was ten years ago? The Phil Kives Stakes (formerly the Agassiz Stakes) honours the man who built the K-Tel empire and one of the strongest stables ever to race at Assiniboia Downs. When you combine the 10 years of the Kives with the 40 years of the Agassiz, 2026 marks a half-century of racing for some of Manitoba’s finest-bred colts and geldings. Click here to learn more about Phil and the race that bears his name.
