"Coffee with Integrity?"

Let Java Love Explain

~Women Coffee Producers Initiative

~Why Buy from a Roaster

SUFFERN, NY...September 29, 2021... At Java Love Coffee Roasting Co., fall means so much more than Pumpkin Spice everything (though theirs has real spice & no artificial sweeteners). As they round out their 10th anniversary year, Java Love founders/co-owners Jodie Dawson and Kristine-Ellis Petrik continue to live out their motto: Coffee With Integrity. Two ways they do this are through their commitment to supporting other women in their still very male-dominated industry, and by continuing to roast all of their coffee themselves. Know where your coffee comes from and how it got there! It matters.

Promoting Women Coffee Producers

Java Love's Women Coffee Producers Series advocates for, supports and uplifts women in the coffee supply chain throughout the world. It's still a predominantly male industry, and for many of the women growers, coffee represents a path to empowerment and financial freedom.

The four microlot coffees currently represented in the series hail from different regions, their diverse flavor profiles reflecting, like wine, their terroir: Peru (Los Lirios de Chirinos, single origin light medium roast); Honduras (Manos de Mujer, dark roast); Mexico (Cafe de Mujeres medium roast); and El Salvador (Finca Noruega, medium dark roast). Dawson + Petrik plan to add more to the collection.

Java Love also supports Cafe Femenino, a one-of-a-kind ethical sourcing model committed to ending the cycle of poverty affecting women coffee farmers across the world. It provides direct compensation to women farmers, along with the opportunity and resources to enact positive change in their communities and on their own terms.

Why Buy Direct from a Roaster?

Java Love Kristine Roasting.jpg

Even before they knew much about the coffee business, Dawson + Petrik were committed to roasting their own beans. In fact, their massive Diedrich roaster took up most of the space in their first Catskills shop. Petrik (pictured) became a certified Coffee Roaster & Green Bean buyer and now oversees the purchase and roasting of hundreds of pounds of coffee per week.

What does it mean to buy coffee direct from a roaster, rather than a supermarket or chain coffee joint? A great deal:

  • Sustainability.
  • Freshness.
  • Transparency.
  • Calibration.
  • Keeping it local.

About Java Love Coffee Roasting Co.

Copy of NCK_0101.jpg

What happens when a clinical psychologist/life coach and a journalist/marketing executive can't stay properly caffeinated in the Catskills? They take over an artisanal coffee roaster and open a 400-square-foot shop in Bethel, NY. Following a positive reception, Dawson (the Ph.D., pictured at right) and Petrik (the CNN alumnus), partners and parents in business and in life, shifted careers to concentrate full-time on the art of roasting small-batch coffee.

A decade later, Java Love is one of the top artisanal roasters in the Northeast with a reputation for serving Fair Trade, organic, sustainably-grown beans which they refer to as "Coffee with Integrity." The brand is also known for spreading good vibes with its neighborly approach to doing business, supporting arts, education, sustainability and food scarcity organizations in their communities. Their mission of love, transparency, growth, and community is evident in every cup they serve.

Dawson and Petrik operate four brick-and-mortar locations (Suffern and Bethel, NY; downtown Montclair/Upper Montclair, NJ); run a thriving online business; partner with more than 50 restaurants, markets and retailers; and manage two mobile espresso carts for catering + special events.

When not working, the Montclair, NJ residents enjoy traveling, raising their daughters and, of course, staying properly caffeinated!
