George Wein -
Passing of a Giant of Jazz
October 2, 1925 - September 18, 2021
By now I'm sure that most of you know that two weeks ago the jazz world lost a legend. George Wein not only began the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk Festival, but he is credited with inventing the very concept of the music festival format in the 1950s.

What many of you may not realize is that the Jazz Club of Sarasota presented its first Satchmo Award to George in 1987. The Satchmo, the Club's most prestigious honor is bestowed to those who have made a “Unique and Enduring Contribution to the Living History of Jazz...Our Original Art Form.”

Our good friend Michael Lazaroff, Executive Director of the Jazz Cruise, recently penned a memoir of his encounters with George Wein. I found Michael's piece to be revealing of the man's energy and genius. We share this remembrance with you here.

Jazz Club Board of Directors Transitions
In August two of our valued Board members decided to step down. Don Levine and Taylor Wald will continue to be active on the Music Committee and as a part of the Jazz Festival production crew respectively. We thank them for their many contributions on the Board and we are grateful that they will continue to work to support the club's efforts.
4 Members Join the Board
In September the Board unanimously approved four outstanding new additions to the Board. Tomas Martinez, David Murphy, Michael Ross and Robert "Nic" Walker will bring a range of skills and experience to the Board. This collectively includes executive business acumen; marketing and social media experience; music education and mentoring; musicianship and event production; and organizational development and fundraising.
The Club is fortunate to add these new members to our already strong Board as we launch our Five Year Strategic Plan.

Board Leadership Confirmed for Next 2 Years
The Board also unanimously approved a slate of five officers. Ed Linehan, Debbie Silver and Peter Anderson will continue in their positions. George McLain will have a new focus to his duties as Vice President for Legal Affairs; and Prince Knight will join the leadership team in the new position of Vice President for General Operations.

Scholarship Fund Sets $30,000 Goal for 2022!

As part of its commitment to student musicians and the preservation Jazz for years to come, the Jazz Club has set a $30,000 goal for this year's Scholarship Fund campaign. This increased level of funding will make it possible to support more students and to begin to expand the amount of individual scholarships.

This effort is being kicked-off by the FREE Sunset Jazz at the Crosley event (described above), where $15 suggested donations will be collected at the door.
