The UJO hosts Jazz at Congo Square, an Inaugural Celebration of Music & Culture!
On August 8, 2021, from 1-7 p.m. at Congo Square, Delfeayo Marsalis, and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra will host the Inaugural Jazz at Congo Square, a FREE celebration of New Orleans music, culture and traditions at Congo Square in Armstrong Park. The festival will feature a variety of artists who have contributed tremendously to our city’s local scene and the international music community at large. Jazz at Congo Square was created to promote and maintain the significance of Congo Square, while highlighting why the space is and should remain a historical landmark in New Orleans. The festival will also feature local art and merchandise vendors, food from local restaurants, chefs and purveyors, and will offer space to nonprofit organizations who share a similar mission of preserving New Orleans. Sponsorship opportunities are available!

This year’s Jazz at Congo Square festivities will kick off with a VIP Patron Party at Gallier Hall on Friday, August 6, with a private and exclusive performance by Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra at the Ty Tracy Theater inside Gallier Hall. VIP guests can bid on the original artwork created for the official festival poster and other items. The Sunday festival lineup will begin at 1:00 PM with a call to the ancestors led by the Congo Square Preservation Society Drum Circle and master percussionist Luther Gray, and feature poetry by acclaimed activist Sunni Patterson, and music by the Vegas Cola Band, Kyle Roussel, Mykia Jovan, Tonya Boyd Cannon (from the hit TV show The Voice), Stooges Brass Band, and a performance by Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra featuring music from their Best of the Beat award-winning cd Jazz Party. The festival will open with a call to the ancestors led by the Congo Square Society Drum Circle and culminate with a jam session and second line parade led by Stooges Brass Band. Learn more about the artists and the festival lineup at wefundraisenow.org/congolineup2021.

Vendor opportunities are available for local creators, artists, restaurants and retail stores, with 10x10 and 10x20 spaces available. Visit www.wefundraisenow.org/congovendors to inquire about vendor opportunities, or to sign up. To learn more about Jazz at the Market or how to become a vendor, visit wefundraisenow.org/congojazz.

Proceeds from Jazz at Congo Square and the VIP Patron Party will benefit two other community-based organizations founded by Marsalis: the Uptown Music Theatre—an award-winning organization that empowers youth through musical theatre training; and Keep NOLA Music Alive (KNOMA)—founded in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic for the purpose of providing emergency relief to native New Orleans culture bearers.

Louis Armstrong - cornet
Through dynamic interactive exhibits, multigenerational educational programming, research facilities and engaging musical performances, the music New Orleans made famous is explored in all its forms.

Housed in the historic Old U.S. Mint, strategically located at the intersection of the French Quarter and the Frenchmen Street live music corridor, the New Orleans Jazz Museum is in the heart of the city's vibrant music scene.

Through partnerships with local, national and international educational institutions, the New Orleans Jazz Museum promotes the global understanding of jazz as one of the most innovative, historically pivotal musical art forms in world history.

Jazz Collection

The New Orleans Jazz Museum's collection is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the world.

The Jazz Collection chronicles the music and careers of the men and women who created, enhanced and continue in the tradition of New Orleans jazz at the local, national and international levels. It consists of instruments, pictorial sheet music, photographs, records, tapes, manuscripts and other items ranging from Louis Armstrong's first coronet to a 1917 disc of the first jazz recording ever made. It includes the world's largest collection of instruments owned and played by important figures in jazz- trumpets, cornets, trombones, clarinets and saxophones played by jazz greats such as Bix Beiderbecke, Edward "Kid" Ory, George Lewis, Sidney Bechet and Dizzy Gillespie.

Other artifacts in the Jazz Collection include some 12,000 photographs from the early days of jazz; recordings in a wide variety of formats, including over 4,000 78 rpm records that date from 1905 to the mid-1950s, several thousand 12-inch LPs and 45 rpm records, approximately 1,400 reel-to-reel tapes; posters, paintings and prints; hundreds of examples of sheet music from late 19th-century ragtime to popular songs of the 1940s and 1950s - many of them first editions that became jazz standards; several hundred rolls of film featuring concert and nightclub footage, funerals, parades, and festivals; hundred of pieces of relevant ephemera; and architectural fragments from important jazz venues...
