Event Chairs Lindsy & Ryan Steinberg welcome you to join them at this family friendly event which will take place at Bowlero Houston (925 Bunker Hill, Houston, TX 77024) on Sunday, September 18th from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Rebecca Beinart will be studying Sociology in the Liberal Arts Honors Program at UT Austin. "I am so grateful to the Parkans family and everyone at Jewish Family Service that have continued the incredible legacies and given back to the community."
Daniel Cohen will be a Business major at the University of Kansas. "The Parkans Family served as wonderful role models in the business world as well as the Jewish Community. I hope to honor their legacy."
Micah Guttman is attending Texas A&M's College of Engineering. "This incredible contribution will help ease my journey. Thank you to the Parkans Family for your generosity!"

The Lloyd and Morissa Parkans Scholarship Fund provides resources to enable Jewish undergraduate students to realize their potential through academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and admirable personal attributes. In honor of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Parkans Scholarship, in conjunction with the Houston Jewish Community Foundation and Nancy Parkans Ehrenkranz, JFS was able to provide three scholarships this year. JFS Houston is proud to support the community with both individualized and group options. All of our support groups and individualized support sessions are facilitated by a rotation of licensed clinicians or master's level clinical intern students under staff supervision. The Zoom interface being accessed is HIPAA compliant and groups will close access 15 minutes after start time. If you have any questions or would prefer to have individual or group therapy/counseling sessions instead of a general support session, you may make an appointment by calling (713) 986-7832 or emailing Adult Counseling or completing our online form: Counseling Appointment Request you should receive a response within 2 business days.

Adolescent (12 to 17 years old) DBT Skills Group* - Your teen might benefit from this group if they are struggling to cope with intense emotions, making impulsive decisions and/or having difficulty with interpersonal relationships. This group is designed to empower teens with the skills to regulate their emotions and better manage difficulties they face.
Participants will learn skills from the 4 Modules of DBT:
- Mindfulness
- Distress Tolerance
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
- Emotion Regulation
The group is an in-person group on Thursdays from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM. and will begin September 8th. Please contact childrensmhp@jfshouston.org to sign up for the group.

The Tulip Group is a free support group intended to empower individuals who are experiencing or have experienced domestic violence. The group aims to provide education on abusive relationships and help individuals develop coping skills. Participants will discuss shared experiences in a confidential and safe space. The group will be facilitated by JFS clinical staff and will meet in person Wednesdays at 4:00 PM. For more information please contact us at: AdultCounseling@jfshouston.org.

In-Person IOP Resumes Fall/Winter 2022! JFS Houston’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured, goals-based and supportive treatment program that utilizes group therapy to help individuals improve their mental health and how they cope with life challenges. Our IOP meets 3 times a week for a total of 9 hours a week. If you are an adult (age 18+) struggling to cope with: adjustment difficulties, grief/loss, relationship issues, work-related stress, depression, anxiety, mood-related symptoms, and/or chronic stress, IOP may be able to help.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a five-step action plan to offer initial help to anyone showing signs of a mental health challenge or in distress. Individuals trained in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) grow their knowledge of the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of behavioral and mental health conditions and addictions. Peer-reviewed studies show that the program reduces the social distance created by negative attitudes and perceptions of individuals with mental illnesses. PAX Tools is a free, 9-hour online course open to the community which reviews trauma-informed, evidence-based strategies for families and communities to promote the development of self-regulation in children. (This course can be taken over a series of days or in one day.) To learn more, please email: PAX Tools Workshop.
Clinical Supervision and Consultation! JFS offers Clinical Supervision for Licensed Master Level of Social Workers and Professional counselors who would like to pursue their clinical licensure. JFS team consist of Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council’s approved clinical supervisors that offer expertise and experience in working with vast range of clients’ populations, ages and presenting problems. Our expertise include:
- Knowledge and skills in working with specific age group: children, adolescents, adults, and seniors.
- Trauma work
- Mental health challenges, as: Depression, Anxiety, Bi-Polar, PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, and others.
- Proficiency in a variety of treatment modalities, as:

- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Shabbat Boxes are needed! If you enjoy arts and crafts, please consider joining the ranks of teens and adults making beautiful Shabbat Boxes for our Velva G. & H. Fred Levine Shabbat Box Program. Our Chaplain and volunteers deliver the boxes to patients in the hospital to help brighten their Shabbat. Here are some examples of Shabbat Boxes to help you to become inspired!

Rosh Hashana Meal Deliveries are happening September 23rd! Don’t miss out on the BEST volunteer activity to start the new year! Once again, volunteers will deliver 100 holiday meals to JFS clients around the Greater Houston area through the generous support of the Sam Roosth Family Foundation. Imagine yourself helping to deliver beautiful bags filled with holiday delicacies and handmade greeting cards created by our volunteers. You will need to register and take the HIPAA quiz for this opportunity. We look forward to having you be a part of a great mitzvah!

Volunteers Needed to Help with the “Bowl a Strike for Mental Health” Event on Sunday September 18th. The Eric M. Suhl Foundation will be hosting a bowling tournament to benefit Touching the Heart, a wellness and suicide prevention program for teens and young adults. Volunteers are needed to register and greet participants. No qualifications required for this event. It will be a lot of fun!

Employment Services is looking for Volunteers to help on Tuesdays or Thursdays at the JFS Career Resource Center. Starting this month, JFS Employment Services will be offering Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon drop-in opportunities for their clients who need assistance with their job search or research. If you have the skills, we could use your help! A current HIPAA quiz is required for this opportunity.

JFS Express Drivers - We are looking to increase our volunteer ranks of JFS Express Drivers. More and more, our JFS clients are requesting assistance in getting to an appointment and JFS Express drivers are a wonderful resource. To become part of the JFS Express team you’ll need a car and a safe driving record, proof of auto insurance, a background check, and a current HIPAA quiz. Past JFS Express members need to renew their HIPAA and motor vehicle driving records.

Friendly Visitors - We are looking to train more Friendly Visitors to meet on a weekly basis with a senior JFS client. This is a wonderful way to make a personal connection with someone and share friendship. HIPAA, background screening, and training are prerequisites for the Friendly Visitor opportunity.
