More than 60 jazz stars – including Musician of the Year Jon Batiste and Lifetime Achievement in Jazz honoree Sheila Jordan – have RSVP’d they’ll be at the Jazz Journalists Association’s JazzBash!, a one-time-only, immersive virtual experience on the innovative platform SyncSpace.live. Sunday, September 11, 2022, 3:00 - 5:30 pm EDT.
The JazzBash! invites anyone online to participate with unprecedented, easily used interactivity in a community-oriented party-concert-conference. Registration is free for JJA members, 2022 Jazz Heroes, nominees and winners of the 27th annual JJA Jazz Awards (announced last April), and $25 for the general public.
At the JJA’s customized site, registrants will be immersed in virtual spaces with a fest-like staggered schedule of activities. Move your avatar by cursor through ballroom, club, bar, gallery and screening room to sample program highlights, which include:

In-the-moment sets are scheduled to feature the singing trio Duchess with clarinetist Anat Cohen from New York City; Anchorage multi-instrumentalist Yngvil Vatn Guttu and band; Chicago saxophonist Ernest Dawkins’ group, El Paso singer-pianist Amanda Eckery, and guitarist Louis Valenzuela from San Diego. Pianist Deanna Witkowski who is the JJA winner of Book of The Year--Mary Lou Williams Music For The Soul, will perform selected compositions by Mary Lou Williams.

Cécile McLorin Salvant, Kurt Elling, Wadada Leo Smith, Ted Gioia, Immanuel Wilkins, Wycliffe Gordon and James Brandon Lewis are among those who accepting Awards live; exclusive videos have arrived from Charles Lloyd, Kenny Garrett, Maria Schneider and her Orchestra, Pedrito Martinez and Mary Halvorson. Performing live are the singing trio Duchess with clarinetist Anat Cohen from New York City, Anchorage-based multi-instrumentalist Yngvil Vatn Guttu leading an ensemble, Chicago saxophonist Ernest Dawkins' quartet, El Paso singer-pianist Amanda Eckery and guitarist Louis Valenzuela’s band from San Diego. Pianist Deanna Witkowski, winner of JJA’s Book of The Year Award for Mary Lou Williams Music For The Soul, will perform a Williams composition.
Panels featuring Melissa Aldana, Jane Ira Bloom, Terri Lyne Carrington, James Francies, Vijay Iyer, James Brandon Lewis and Nicole Mitchell, moderated by Greg Bryant (WRTI), Willard Jenkins (DC Jazz Festival) and Neil Tesser (KSDS Jazz), will discuss “Updating the Jazz Canon,” “Jazz Family Origins,” and “Where My Music’s Going.” Bill Crow, Claire Daly, Peter Keepnews and Mark Ruffin will share jazz stories and jokes; Carol Friedman, winner of the JJA’s Lona Foote-Bob Parent Award for Career Photography, will narrate a slide exhibition; Keith Kelleywill read from writings of Greg Tate (posthumous winner of the JJA’s 2022 Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism Award).
Since 1996, the JJA -- non-profit professional association of journalists covering jazz – has held Awards-presenting events at venues including New York City’s Blue Note Jazz Club, B.B. King’s, the Jazz Standard, City Winery, Alice Tully Hall and the Knitting Factory. In 2020 the JJA Awards Winners Zoom Party webcast on HotHouseGlobal.tv reached more than 7000 viewers, and continues to attract views in archival form. Portions of the JazzBash will be streamed live to the JJA’s Facebook page, and later archived on YouTube, but the full experience of roaming through multiple simultaneous events will only be available as scheduled, online. (Note: SyncSpace.live will not work on some mobile devices).
“The JazzBash! is the JJA exploring and experimenting with new media to advance jazz coverage, stimulate jazz interest and bring the people of jazz together, for better communications,” says Howard Mandel, president of the Jazz Journalists Association. “A bash like this shows jazz media is alive and well.”
