Jeremy Gulban has led the rapid expansion of CherryRoad Media — acquiring 93 local newspapers across 18 states, many in rural and small-town markets others have walked away from.
At the upcoming Family Owners Regional Roundtable in Chicago (Sept. 18-19), Gulban will break down how they’ve built a sustainable business model by focusing on scale, disciplined expense management and a clear-eyed approach to the economics of print in smaller communities.
The session — “Frugal Innovation: The Road to Financial Sustainability” — is designed for small and mid-sized newspaper owners and operators looking for real-world strategies to strengthen their business in a challenging environment. Gulban will share what’s worked, what hasn’t and how local publishers can rethink operations to improve sustainability and impact — without losing what makes them local.
Additional sessions will also explore how newspapers in small markets are diversifying revenue, leveraging community support to fund growth and developing audience strategies that reflect current reader behavior and expectations. Attendees will take part in peer-led idea exchanges, gain insight into emerging policy issues and engage in candid, confidential discussions around business structure, succession and leadership transition planning.
Registration is just $50 per person, thanks to support from the SNPA Foundation. That includes Thursday’s dinner and the full day of sessions on Friday.
