Jerome “The Junkyard Dog” Williams: From NBA Grit to Community Impact Speaking at GlobalMindED 2025

Jerome Williams—known to fans as the “Junkyard Dog”—built a career in the NBA by doing the work few wanted: diving for loose balls, defending the toughest matchups, and putting the team first. Now, he’s channeling that same energy into mentorship, education, and youth empowerment. As President of the Chapters Program for the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) and founder of the JYD Project, Williams is reshaping what it means to lead from the heart—and he’ll be speaking at the 2025 GlobalMindED Conference to share that vision as the finale to the three day gathering on What Unites Us? Sports, Music, Entertainment, the Outdoors and Serving Others.

Williams has long understood that not every leader is in the spotlight. His new memoir, R.O.L.E. Player: Passing on the Wisdom, makes the case that those who embrace humility, consistency, and selfless contribution often make the most lasting impact. In the book, R.O.L.E. stands for Relentless Opportunists Leverage Everything, a mindset Williams used to carve out his nine-season NBA career with the Pistons, Raptors, Bulls, and Knicks. With reflections from his own life and guidance on developing “mission, method, and measurables,” the book provides a playbook for personal growth and purpose-driven leadership.

In a special gift to the next generation, every student attending the 2025 GlobalMindED Conference will receive a free eBook version of R.O.L.E Player, It’s more than a memoir—it’s a message: that your value is not defined by being the loudest in the room, but by how well you uplift others around you.

Williams continues to live that truth through action. Through the JYD Project, he brings mentorship, scholarships, and anti-bullying programming to schools nationwide, reaching thousands of students in underserved communities. As President of the NBRPA’s Chapters Program, he’s helped transform retired NBA and WNBA players into community leaders—connecting them with schools, universities, and youth organizations to inspire lasting change.

Williams also serves as a Sports Ambassador for AAU and a champion of financial literacy and STEM access. His Shooting for Peace initiative, developed with JPMorgan Chase and the New York Knicks, provides mentorship and economic education, distributing thousands of R.O.L.E. Player copies directly to students across the country.

His impact is also etched into the game’s history—he was recently honored in the Toronto Raptors’ 25th Anniversary Book as one of the most beloved players in franchise history. Known for his hustle and deep connection to fans, Williams remains a respected figure in the NBA community and beyond.

At GlobalMindED, Jerome Williams will speak on how young leaders can embrace their unique role—whether on a team, in a classroom, or in their community. His message is clear: you don’t need to be the star to change the game. You just need to play your role with purpose, passion, and persistence.
