Jessica Lubin's Good Karma Studio : Balancing Mindful Practice w/ Performance Arts

I met Jessica Lubin (Good Karma Studio) last year as part of my interim leadership gig at the CCIAC (Contemporary Circus and Immersive Arts Center) for the 2024 season. She took down the big top tent for a student showcase and ended up with an overflow crowd and sold out show. This woman owned, for profit business sits at the crossroads of holistic health and the performance arts. Jessica's programming rides the forefront of new understandings regarding the value of integrating creative arts as a tool in physical wellness and mental health.

"When combined, they create a unique synergy that offers the best of both worlds. Yoga can enhance circus performers' flexibility, balance, and focus, allowing them to execute complex routines with precision. Circus arts, meanwhile, bring a sense of joy, creativity, and exhilaration, reminding individuals that wellness doesn’t always have to be serious or quiet — it can also be fun and filled with wonder." OM!

Kayden Avery Fitzgerald :

A Journey to Creative Practice(s)

As with many who are working full time in the creative economy, Kayden Avery Fitzgerald has a very round about path that he has traveled to get to where he is today. The story felt familiar to me in that there were so many stops along the way, each informing a different aspect that led to a destination. I was especially surprised to find out Kayden had worked with a couple of organizations I had in the past including Industrial Safety Supply Company Protective Industrial Products where I managed a large sales territory for a couple of years and Author, Professional Dominatrix and Boudoir Photography Studio Owner Mistress Couple who brought me on for a guest room interior remodel / design project.

"As a trans man, navigating the trade environments and finding spaces to learn and grow has been an interesting experience. If I can foster a place where I can share the knowledge, skills, empowerment, and joy that woodworking brings to those who don’t feel safe in traditional trade environments, then I’ll be doing something right." INSIDE ACE! | CREATING A NEW PATH

Each month I tend to lock into a thematic rhythm with the content of the newsletter. It's generally not planned but just falls into place as I allow things to develop to completion. Interestingly, this month revolves around 'the journey taken' as both of my interviews feature that theme heavily. Like most creative things go, the process is a big part of it and sometimes the most important part of the growth. Jessica Lubin's Good Karma Studio (a woman owned, for profit biz) developed over time and space from the streets of NYC's diamond district to rural villages in Guatemala and India, finally to end up in the Capital Region. Kayden Avery Fitzgerald's journey on the other hand was in the navigation of military service and a number of internships and jobs in different industries before landing on a balance of creativity and mission as a trans man. In these stories we can find important pieces of guidance, ones that can be used to navigate the perilless journey that is now before us...as a region but specifically as a nation. I am hopeful we can land with such grace and good stead.

Dropped an update on the Creatives Rebuild NY program ACE! has been participating in. Getting increasingly active in our legislative process seems more important than ever as we see public arts and culture funding continue to be strained. Please find ways that you can contribute your voice in solidarity as we move into what may be critical times of challenge for the arts. Remember, our value is beyond economy and moves into community building with a generous side of public health benefits and joy. We are critical to a functioning democracy and healthy society.

Big thanks to the Troy Music Hall for the fab tickets! Also, I recommend RSVP'ing to the Centers for an Urban Future Panel Event : Integrating the Arts into New York State's 2025 Policy Agenda on February 25 at the Hilton in Albany. Should be a good one!

As always, if you have any cool creative job listings, open calls, industry news or grant funding opportunities, drop me a line and get them included in our next issue.

ACE! was asked to participate in a statewide campaign to raise awareness around the value of a creative economy and the importance of sustainable renumeration for artists. Images below are from the campaign rollout in Times Square in January. For more info : Creatives Rebuild NY .

Currently there is momentum to influence the legislature to fund a study to begin pursuing a NYS 'Creative Economy Strategic Plan' that could be used as a basis for justification and systematically sustainable funding for the arts and those who make them across the state. To stay in the loop or participate in the drive check out the ART TAKES WORK page on CRNY's website.
