Thank you for choosing to participate in Jesuit Week of Service!
Hello and welcome to Jesuit Week of Service!

Despite not being able to hold our in-person JDOS event on Saturday, April 25th, we have not given up the Magis and are keeping the JDOS spirit alive through JWOS! The world is still in need of acts of service, community, and hope. Stay tuned for our daily emails, follow us on Instagram, and let's do some good! Thanks again for participating!

Stay safe and healthy,

History of Jesuit Day of Service
What began jointly as a 125th anniversary celebration of John Carroll University and St. Ignatius High School has continued as a way of connecting, collaborating, and celebrating the shared mission of Jesuit institutions. What we wish to foster through this joint effort is a real experience of service and solidarity with mutual benefit to those we are with.

Purpose of the day:
  • Foster awareness of the network of Jesuit institutions in the greater Cleveland area.
  • Highlight the impact of a shared mission directed outwardly towards service to others.
  • Celebrate this joint collaboration of service to others.
  • Foster solidarity with one another and the community.
  • Witness to a greater purpose.

This project originated from an annual service day at JCU called “Cultivating Community Day” that began in the spring 2004 as part of Dr. Peggy Finucane’s class dedicated to learning about the economic, political, historical, and religious complexities of an urban neighborhood in Cleveland. In 2011, JCU partnered for the first time with St. Ignatius High School for a day of service in recognition of their joint 125th anniversaries. The day proved to be so popular that it led Councilman Joe Cimperman (St. Ignatius High School ’88 and JCU ’92) to suggest initiating a citywide day of service involving all of the Jesuit institutions in Northeast Ohio. In 2012, the name was changed to Jesuit Day of Service and the ten Jesuit institutions in the region partnered for a day of service together. Since then, it has evolved into an annual day of service inspired by the spirit of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

This year, we have taken on the challenge - to find new creative ways to sustain the bonds of community and spirit of Jesuit Day of Service through a Jesuit Week of Service.
What to Expect: Daily Service Challenges
There are many ways to do meaningful things for the common good and to work for others, even during a time of social distancing. It is important now more than ever to think about how we can nurture a spirit of shared responsibility, hope, and be men and women with and for others - everyday. Our Service Challenges provide a way for you to stay involved with the community from home!

As part of JWOS, we are presenting you with Service Challenges every day this week. We are providing all the details you need to engage with the community in a whole new way!
How to participate and share your actions:

• Take photographs or videos of each of the daily challenges in which you choose to participate

• You have three options for sharing your challenge with us:
  1. On Instagram, make a post, tag @jcu_cssa and use the hashtags: #JWOS2020, #jcucssa, #servecle, and #servicechallenge. Your profile must be public for us to view your photos
  2. DM @jcu_cssa on Instagram with your photos
  3. Email with your images

*Please note that CSSA may choose to share your photographs or videos and use your content for marketing purposes unless you specify you would not like your photographs or videos to be used*
What to Expect: Community Partner Spotlight
Each day we will be featuring some of JCU's Cleveland area community partners. Typically on the day of JDOS we send students to nine different community partners to do service together. This week, with the help of our incredible JWOS Leadership Team, we will feature the amazing things these partners do for the Cleveland community and how you can support their efforts. Look forward to our 'Community Partner Spotlight' each day!
What to Expect: Sustainability Suggestion
Sustainability has been a key focus at JCU and in the world this year. JCU's Sustainability Interns will be providing key educational components each day this week on how you can do your part to be sustainable.

The Sustainability Interns will be giving "Sustainability Suggestions" centered around the topic of waste: food, plastic, and material waste. Each day they will provide a short educational piece on the topic, as well as tips and challenges to reduce your everyday waste
