From the Temple to the Poorhouse
Rev. Hardy Kim, preaching
Greetings!

We’re almost there. Our journey to the miracles of Easter is almost complete! We’re so close that our traditions even give us a little break from all the penitence and self-denial, in the form of our Palm Sunday celebrations. We certainly hope that you’ll join us for the vibrant palms and the beautiful processions of young people. We even encourage you to participate in the joy by being a part of the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering.

But we also know that this celebration is going to be temporary; that, after the cheering crowd has gone away, Jesus will continue journeying to the cross. It seems strange, doesn’t it? This week we’ll think deeply on why his story moves this way, and what it means. On top of that we’ll raise a question or two about what it might mean for us too, to walk a path that leads away from celebration to suffering.

In Christ’s peace,
Hardy
Theme for Sunday

When we start being too impressed by the results of our work, we slowly come to the erroneous conviction that life is one large scoreboard where someone is listing the points to measure our worth. And before we are fully aware of it, we have sold our soul to the many grade-givers. This means we are not only in the world, but also of the world. Then we become what the world makes us. —Henri Nouwen, Out of Solitude
Questions for Reflection

  • Have you ever worked hard, for a long time, to achieve a goal or to win respect from the world around you? What was it like? How did you feel when that process was over?

  • Have you ever encountered obstacles on the path to “success” that you couldn’t overcome? How have these difficulties or changes to your plan shaped you?
