A Word from the Pastor

August 11, 2023

When Pope Francis spoke to over a million young people in Lisbon (Portugal) at World Youth Day, he knew that the world was listening. His message was addressed not only to the young people at WYD but also to young people everywhere. And his message has relevance for us old Christians as well.

He spoke frequently about the importance of faith in Christ and the need for each of us to encounter him in our lives. He spoke also about the need to keep the focus on God and others, not thinking only of ourselves. In his homily at the closing Mass last Sunday, he reflected on the gospel account of the Transfiguration by highlighting three words from the story: shine, listen, and be unafraid.

He said we need to be close to Jesus so that it is his light that shines in us. We never want to put the spotlight on ourselves. We need to heed the words of the Father who says of Jesus: “Listen to him.” We listen to Jesus in the Scriptures, in the many ways he speaks to us including in our hearts. Thirdly, we need to be unafraid.

Young people want to make a difference in the world. The Holy Father encouraged them to go forth into the world and be unafraid to be the light of Christ. Go, make a difference.

You can view and listen to his major speeches and homilies online with an English translation provided. The direct link is

As you know, our parish had a delegation of young people and adults who participated in WYD along with a pilgrimage with the Eudists in France prior to going to Portugal. I invite you to attend the 5:00 pm Mass on August 20 during which I will invite a couple of our young pilgrims to share their impressions. There will be food on the patio following the Mass and then a praise and worship celebration in the church. Come and experience the joy and enthusiasm. (See the details of August 20 below.)

Solemnity of the Assumption

Every year we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15. This day commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time.

This solemnity is a holy day of obligation in the United States. Our Mass schedule for this Tuesday will be as follows:

August 15, 2022

7:00 am Mass in English

8:00 am Mass in English

5:30 pm Mass in English

7:00 pm Mass in Spanish

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

While the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary only dates from 1950, it is a longstanding belief among Christians. This brief article explains what we believe and why.

We are now forming a new group of catechumens and candidates. The English group will meet on Sunday mornings beginning September 10. This is a change from our meeting date in the past. We will invite the English group to attend the 9:00 am Mass together and then stay for another hour of formation after the Mass.

Fr. Azam will offer the program twice: on the evening of August 21 and in the morning of August 22. read below for all the details.

Learn More about the Eucharist

As a part of the Diocesan Institute, Fr. Ron Bagley will be teaching a six week course entitled The Eucharist and Sunday. It will be held here at St. Patrick Parish Center on Tuesday evenings, beginning on September 12, 6:30-9:00 pm and concluding on October 24 (skipping September 26).

The course will explore the biblical and liturgical meaning of Sunday, and the Eucharist, sacrament of the Paschal Mystery, as source and summit of the Christian life. Because this course will explore the biblical, theological and liturgical foundations of the Eucharist, it is very appropriate at the beginning of the National Eucharistic Revival year.

Registration is being handled by the Diocesan Institute office. Contact them at https://sdcatholic.org/office-for/diocesan-institute/course-schedule/ or call (858) 490-8212. This course can be used for credit toward diocesan certification or for personal enrichment. If you have questions, contact Fr. Ron.

Psalm 85:9-14

Second Reading

Romans 9:1-5

Gospel Reading

Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus walks on water, and the disciples acknowledge him as the Son of God.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s Gospel directly follows last week’s account of Jesus feeding a crowd of more than 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. For the sake of the crowds, Jesus had postponed his time of solitude. Now, at last, Jesus finds some time for quiet and prayer. He sends his disciples ahead of him by boat, dismisses the crowds, and then withdraws to the mountain to pray.

The disciples do not fare well. They struggle to weather the wind and waves, making little progress in their journey. We are reminded of a previous story in Chapter 8 of Matthew’s Gospel, when Jesus calms the seas. This time, however, Jesus does not calm the seas, and the disciples do not express fear until they see Jesus walking toward them on the water. In this story it is not the storm that is feared but the sight of Jesus before them, whom they mistake for a ghost.

Clues like these suggest that this story is about the disciples’ growing understanding of the identity of Jesus. In continuity with the story of the feeding of the multitude, today’s Gospel is also about what the disciples’ faith in Jesus will enable them to do. In last week’s Gospel, when the disciples see the crowds, they ask Jesus to send the crowds away. Jesus turns the situation around, telling the disciples to feed the crowd with the provisions that they have. Both of these Gospels tell us much about ministry.

Jesus calls to the disciples and calms their fears. He is not a ghost. The impulsive Peter seeks proof that the person is indeed Jesus. He asks Jesus to call him out onto the water, and Jesus grants this request. Peter’s fear and doubt overtake him, however, once he is walking on the water. Jesus reaches out to Peter and saves him. When Jesus and Peter enter the boat, Matthew reports that the wind ceases, and the disciples confess that Jesus is the Son of God.

Faith in Jesus will enable the disciples to do the work that Jesus has done. Peter walks on water. The five loaves and two fish feed a multitude of people. The disciples can and will participate in the work of the kingdom of heaven. When Peter fears and doubts the person of Jesus, however, he falters. Peter’s example teaches us that true Christian ministry emerges from the faith that Jesus is the Messiah, God’s only Son.

Saint John Eudes Feast Day

Jesús te dice at ti, “Ven”, ¿Cuál es tu respuesta?
