Calling All Gardeners!

Bennington gardeners and those who love nature and working outside.
The Cemetery Committee is looking for a few volunteers for our Beautification Work Crew.  The tree and hydrangeas we planted in our lovely meditation garden in the cemetery are flourishing.  But so are the weeds.  Our small garden, not the perimeter hedge which is trimmed by professionals,  could use some  loving care:  light trimming, weeding and edging three times a year:   This year the dates are  Sundays July 2,  August 13 and Oct 21  from 9-11.

If you are interested in helping please call the synagogue  office ( 442-9645)  to leave your name and which date(s) you're available,  or email Lora Block  lblock@sover.net   Or, you can just show up, but  if you sign up someone can contact you for a raindate if needed.

Finally you have the opportunity to cook up that favorite brisket recipe and compete for 1st place in Beth El Synagogue's newest, yummiest fundraiser.

This even is open to the public to both compete and eat on August 13th at the South Church in St. Johnsbury.

To Eat:
To enjoy some delicious brisket, just show up with $10 per adult or $5 per child on August 13th at 5:30 pm.   Bring some extra dollars to vote for your favorite brisket.  This event will be held at the South Church, 1052 Main street in St Johnsbury.

To Compete:
To enter a brisket, there is a $15 entrance fee for those wanting to compete.  The Brisket must be a minimum of 4 lbs and only beef is allowed.  Because this is a Jewish fundraiser, no dairy or pork is allowed in the recipe.  Please register online or by mail no later than August 8th and bring your brisket on August 13th hot and ready to serve b etween
4:30 - 5:00 pm.

This is a friendly competition, with the judges giving points on appearance, tenderness, taste.   This fun event will be selling brisket plates to the public, and allow for the crowd to weigh in by buying 'votes' for their favorite brisket they want to see win. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes.

Lectures on the Dartmouth Campus

Monday, August 14, 2017, 4:30 pm
Filene Auditorium/Moore Hall
Title: He will discuss the philosophy of race.
Lecturer: George Yancy, Emory University

BIO: He works primarily in the areas of critical philosophy of race, critical whiteness studies, and philosophy of the Black experience. He is particularly interested in the formation of African-American philosophical thought as articulated within the social and historical space of anti-Black racism, African-American agency, and questions of identity formation. His current work focuses on the theme of whiteness and how it constitutes a site of embedded social reality and a site of deep and enduring opacity, which is related to what he has theorized as white ambush. He is interested in the ways in which whiteness as an embodied phenomenon is a reality underwritten by historical forces and practices.  Yancy is also interested in ways to engage philosophy dynamically, to practice frank speech or courageous speech, within and outside the classroom. Yancy's publications are varied and extensive. He has authored, edited, and co-edited numerous books, articles, and chapters. His work has been quoted worldwide, including in Turkey, Australia, South Africa, and Sweden. He is known for his powerful and influential conversations with philosophers on race at The Stone, New York Times. Yancy is also "Philosophy of Race" Book Series Editor at Lexington Books.

A Scream in the Night: White Racism as Anti - theological
George Yancy, Emory University
Monday, August 14, 2017, 4:30 pm
Filene Auditorium/Moore Hall
Dartmouth College Hanover NH

Description: Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel argues that the prophetic voice is a scream in the night.  Yancy takes this to imply that the prophetic voice forces us to listen, to hear, to open ourselves up to courageous speech, and to speak courageously.  How ought that scream sound today, especially given our current historical moment, a moment that is far from a "post-racial" America? He will argue that white racism is anti-theological and that it is important that white people engage their whiteness as both a site of privilege and power in order to confront contemporary forms of racism.  He will show how whiteness is relational, and thereby how it oppresses and denigrates Black bodies, stressing Heschel's powerful point that all are responsible. This raises the issue of white responsibility when it comes to racism.  He will also engage Heschel's work by arguing that racism is, as he might say, "a cancer of the soul." His objective is to speak to the importance of  Heschel's prophetic voice regarding race, and demonstrate its implications for our contemporary moment.

BIO: George Yancy is professor of philosophy at Emory University. He received his Ph.D. (with distinction) in philosophy from Duquesne University where he was the first McAnulty Fellow. He received his first M.A. in philosophy from Yale University and his second M.A. in Africana Studies from NYU, where he received the prestigious McCracken Fellowship. He received his BA (cum laude) in philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. His work focuses primarily in the areas of critical philosophy of race, critical whiteness studies, and philosophy of the black experience. He has authored many academic articles and book chapters. He has authored, edited, or co-edited over 18 books, which include Exploring Race in Predominantly White Classrooms: Scholars of Color Reflect; Pursuing Trayvon Martin: Historical Contexts and Contemporary Manifestations of Racial Dynamics; Look, A White! Philosophical Essays on Whiteness; and, Critical Perspectives on bell hooks. The first edition of Black Bodies, White Gazes received an honorable mention from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights and three of his edited books have received CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book Awards. Yancy's work has been cited nationally and internationally in places like Turkey, South Africa, Sweden, and Australia. He is editor of the Philosophy of Race Book Series at Lexington Books, and is known for his influential interviews and controversial articles on the subject of race at The Stone (The New York Times). In 2016, he co-edited a new book entitled, Our Black Sons Matter, and the second edition of Black Bodies, White Gazes was recently released. This year, his book, On Race: 34 Conversations in a Time of Crisis, will be published by Oxford University Press, and his authored book, Dear White America will be published by Rowman & Littlefield.

PJ Library in Vermont Connects Jewish Families to Celebrate Jewish Life
Grants will strengthen social connections and increase opportunities for Jewish experiences and learning across the United States and Canada

Burlington and Montpelier, VT - Montpelier and Burlington area families raising Jewish children will now have more opportunities to participate in Jewish life, thanks to a grant recently awarded by PJ Library ® , the flagship program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, which partners with local communities throughout the world to bring a monthly gift of stories and songs to families raising Jewish children.

PJ Library in Vermont , a program of Jewish Communities of Vermont, just received $15,000 to launch Sing, Shmooze and Celebrate: PJ Family Adventures which will offer monthly holiday programs as well as monthly playgroups for parents and children for families raising Jewish children in both Burlington and Montpelier.

The winning initiatives are designed to build social connections among families and engage them in Jewish life, programming, or learning. They range from public space holiday programs to ongoing neighborhood meet-ups to Shabbat-themed workshops and dinners.  The goal of Sing, Shmooze and Celebrate: PJ Family Adventures, is for parents and children to form lasting friendships, learn more about their Jewish heritage and make decisions about how to bring Jewish values and traditions into their family's life.

"PJ Library in Vermont is honored to receive this grant, and thrilled to be part of the global PJ Library community reaching more than 125,000 families," said Rabbi Tobie Weisman, Program Director of PJ Library in Vermont.

The 12 winning grant proposals were chosen through a competitive process open to organizations implementing PJ Library across North America. A survey of 800 participants in last year's grant-funded projects showed:
  • 85% of families connected socially during the programs
  • 64% of families followed up with the social connections afterward
  • 76% of families sought out or attended other Jewish programs
  • 99% would recommend the programs to friends

" PJ Library's impact goes well beyond the more than 170,000 books we send out each month across the United States and Canada," said Judi Wisch, director of community engagement for PJ Library. "We have worked closely with our local partners for years to help advance Jewish family engagement, and now we are able to add financial support to help ensure the success of great initiatives."

Part of a five-year strategy to expand Jewish engagement in North America, these grants are funded through the PJ Library Alliance. Partners in the Alliance are the Azrieli Foundation; Carl and Joann Bianco; William Davidson Foundation; Jim Joseph Foundation; William and Audrey Farber Philanthropic Fund; Diane and Guilford Glazer/ Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles; the Marcus Foundation, Inc.; Howard and Geraldine Polinger Family Foundation; Susser Family Trust; Walter, Arnee, Sarah, and Aaron Winshall; and two anonymous partners.

JCOGS members will be marching in the  Vermont LGBTQ Pride Parade in Burlington
on Sunday, September 10, 2017.
The parade starts at 12 p.m. at the south end of Church St.,
and ends at the Battery Park Pride festival, which includes a
performance stage, vendors, etc.
Marchers who wish to purchase Jewish-themed Pride t-shirts can find some terrific ones here. JCOGS' participation in Vermont Pride Festival is another way for our community to express the Jewish values of Simhah- Joy- and Tzelem Elohim (we are all created) in the image of G-d, while having a fun day in community.
For more information, please contact Shoshana Frieden at  s.k.frieden@gmail.com.
All are welcome to join this free and fun event!
