Important Communication from the
Jewish Federation of Edmonton

From the President:

We last updated you over the summer regarding our meeting with the Edmonton Journal  resulting from the anti-Semitic cartoon published by them on August 1, 2019 . At that time, we came away from the meeting with a number of steps that we believed were to be taken by the Edmonton Journal. One of those was that they were going to publish an op-ed about anti-Semitism. We  have  followed up with the Edmonton Journal on numerous occasions. Over the course of the summer, the Edmonton Journal advised that they would publish the op-ed in early September. When we followed up in early September, we were advised by the Edmonton Journal that the “time to devote to write an op-ed is at a premium”. We are disappointed with the lack of response from the Edmonton Journal and believe that this is sadly not a priority for them.
We invite you to contact the Edmonton Journal directly to voice your concerns.

We will continue to hold the Edmonton Journal, and all others who publish matters that harm our community, to account.
We would like to wish you all a Gmar Chatima Tovah.

Steven Shafir
President
Jewish Federation of Edmonton

United Jewish Appeal
Your gifts to UJA make us safer!

As we gather for the High Holidays in our homes and synagogues, we are all aware of the increased risks we face as Jewish people. Around us, anti-Semitic vitriol and increased attacks against Jewish communities make us fear for our safety and security. Through these difficult times, your gifts to UJA keep us safer. Thanks to your help, The Jewish Federation is able to provide grants to our synagogues for High Holiday security services. Through your support, Federation’s Community Security Officer, Tal Toubiana, works closely with The Edmonton Police Service to monitor risks and keep the community informed. Tal does periodic security assessments of buildings in our community and has helped community organizations apply for Federal Security Infrastructure funding. Your help also allows Federation to offer our community free training courses in Situational Awareness, First Aid, Active Shooter Lockdown Training, and Emergency Planning and Preparedness. In addition, thanks to the help of a very generous UJA donor, Federation has just introduced a new grant program open to all beneficiaries for increased security measures.

Your support of UJA makes us safer and more secure, during the holidays and throughout the year.

Please make a gift to the 2019/20 UJA Campaign for Our Community.

Thank you for your support.
