Against the backdrop of the Pacific War of WWII, South Pacific blends high-stakes wartime romance with a poignant exploration of social prejudice. When spirited Navy nurse, Nellie Forbush, falls in love with a sophisticated French planter, and a young Marine lieutenant finds himself captivated by an ethereal island girl, their relationships are tested by the prejudices and pressures of a world at war. What unfolds is a deeply moving story about love, courage, and the transformative power of understanding. Featuring a soaring score by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, including classics like “Some Enchanted Evening” and “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame,” South Pacific remains one of the most beloved musicals of all time.
Winner of the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the original Broadway production won ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Libretto. It is the only musical production ever to have won all four Tony Awards for acting.

THE STAMP THIEF

From an Oscar, Peabody, and Emmy award-winning team, “The Stamp Thief” is part detective story, part heist film, and part untold history. The documentary investigates a tale dating back to the Holocaust: that a mysterious Nazi stole priceless stamp collections from concentration camp victims and buried the stolen stamps in a small town in Poland.
Embarking on a real-life “Argo”-like adventure, one-time “Seinfeld” producer Gary Gilbert sets out to confirm the story and recover the stamps. His tactic: a fake movie shoot. His goal: to return the stamps to their rightful owners, hopefully delivering a small measure of justice more than 70 years after the Holocaust.

Welcome to High Holy Days at Congregation Ner Shalom, which are always musical, engaging, and unorthodox.
In this season of taking stock, we look into what is required of us to move through and respond to the intersecting crises that we face, and nourish their evolutionary potential. How do we hold ourselves as fully-resourced, wise, and visionary people, meeting challenges designed to make us feel helpless? Together we will lean into the quality and practice of courage, and the nourishment of connection – to community, to the Divine, and to the earth that gives us life.
Join us to explore the concept of ometz lev – a Hebrew phrase meaning “courage,” made up of a word for strength and a word for heart or soulfulness. How might we effectively cultivate both?

The High Holidays are approaching, and we are joyfully preparing to enter the year 5787 together. Makom Shalom will gather over four sacred days, carrying us from the sweetness of beginning again into the deep work of teshuvah, forgiveness, and return.
Rabbi Zelig Golden will guide our communal journey alongside other community teachers, with Sacred Music Leader Alex Kugler and a beautiful ensemble of community musicians and prayer leaders.
Together, we will pray, sing, awaken with the shofar, share festival meals, gather around the sacred fire, remember those who came before us, and renew our lives for the year ahead.
