TU B'SHVAT AT THE PEPPERWOOD PRESERVE Santa Rosa, CA Please join Rabbi Steve, and the Shir Shalom community on Tu 'Bshvat at the Pepperwood Preserve. The afternoon event will be spent with Ben Benson, who spoke at the CSS Yom Kippur service, and will include a walk through the Preserve. Tu B’Shvat marks the 15th of the Hebrew month of Shevat, known as the New Year for Trees, a day for celebrating nature, eating fruit, and reflecting on environmental stewardship.

Let's learn about the history of Rikkudei Am (Dances of the People) and dances from the early pioneer days, incorporating European and Middle Eastern styles of dance, from the debka to the tcherkassia, circle, line, and couple dances, to current Israeli favorites incorporating salsa, Yemeni, Indian, Moroccan, hip-hop and jazz!
We'll start with a warm-up and lesson, and move on to different choreographies from the vibrant Israeli dance scene.

Enjoy free popcorn and sodas and a rare theatrical screening of CST member Susan Stern's classic, award-winning documentary Barbie Nation, which explores the secret history and weird cult around the world's most controversial doll. Viewers over age 13 only; teens welcome. Doll nudity. Exotic Barbie conventions. Deep insights into sex roles, body image issues, LGBTQ fantasy and American nostalgia.
All questions answered at the following Tisch Friday, Feb. 13 with Director Susan Stern. Rabbi's Tisch: Susan Stern tells all on the making of her film Barbie Nation: How a Jewish woman created an American icon. Barbie, arguably the ultimate shiksa, was created by Jewish entrepreneur Ruth Handler who founded Mattel with her husband Elliot. All the legacy American toy companies -- Mattel, Hasbro, Ideal -- were founded by Jews.
Susan will share an intimate, 15-minute film of Ruth and Elliot at home and tell how she talked her way into Mattel and the Handler's trust.
