Kevin Czerwinski of Suffern was just looking for a way to help his son Thomas log required public service hours when he entered the Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry, a project of Rockland Jewish Family Service in West Nyack.

“A friend of mine volunteers there,” Mr. Czerwinski said. “He suggested one day it might be nice if I came over and helped out with my son. We went and fell in love with it and the people there and the work and kept coming back every month since.”
Rockland couple joins tour of FIDF initiatives in Israel

Inna and Joshua Needelman of West Nyack were among 60 participants from the tri-state area who took part in an FIDF National Mission last month. The group met with Israeli government and military leaders and soldiers and commanders at many IDF bases at a time of increased tension across Israel. They also got behind-the-scenes tours of Israel Defense Force bases and met with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. Stops included Israeli Navy bases, the Ramat David Israel Air Force Base, the Michve Alon IDF Education and Youth Corps Base, and historic and strategic landmarks from the Western Wall in Jerusalem to the Lebanon border.

Why I support Yaffed’s efforts to improve education

In New York State, all private schools, both secular or religious, are required to provide an education “substantially equivalent” in scope and sequence to the public schools. That means an education with a clear goal of preparing students for the Regents exams and a Regents diploma — an education that prepares them to meet the economic and societal challenges of modern life.

Having received such an education in New York at Yeshiva University High School, I, my schoolmates, and the thousands of others who have been educated in modern Orthodox and yeshiva high schools attest that this is a standard that can be achieved without corrupting one’s religious beliefs.
