Orangetown Jewish Center reinvents Jewish education with Kulanu program

Don’t call it Hebrew school.
Don’t even call it school.
At the the Orangetown Jewish Center in Orangeburg, the Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning educational assemblage of kids in grades K-7 has been redubbed Kulanu, Hebrew for “all of us.” And while the program is overseen by an educational director and the synagogue has clear educational goals for the children, the Kulanu program rejects the model of Jewish education as school.
Bergen, Rockland groups team up for education program to fight anti-Semitism

The Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey and Rockland County’s Holocaust Museum Center for Tolerance and Education welcomes teachers and educators to anti-bias and diversity training sessions.

“Learning from the Past, Understanding Today,” the first session of “Addressing anti-Semitism through Education Training” is on Wednesday, February 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. “Proactive and Reactive Strategies for You and Your Students” is the topic on Wednesday, March 18, at the same time. Both sessions are at JFNNJ in Paramus, 50 Eisenhower Drive.
Shirah chorus performing in Rockland
Shirah will perform at Congregation Sons of Israel in Nyack on Sunday, March 8, at 7 p.m.; a kosher dessert buffet will follow the performance.

Shirah was formed in January 1995 with the support of its founding patrons, Bernard and Ruth Weinflash, z”l, as a regional chorus specializing in the performance of the full spectrum of Jewish music. The school is at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades’s Thurnauer School of Music in Tenafly. Its roster includes a multigenerational blend of singers from northern New Jersey, Rockland County, and the New York metropolitan area. Shirah performs at the North American Jewish Choral Festival every year, and it also sings in venues around the tri-state area.
