ROCKLAND STORIES
Virtual ‘drinks with friends’ in Rockland

The Jewish Federation of Rockland County has encouraged members of the synagogues whose leaders belong to the Rockland Board of Rabbis to look for ways to get together during the pandemic. Two of those shuls, the Nanuet Hebrew Center and the Montebello Jewish Center, join every Thursday at 8 p.m., after the online NHC minyan, for joint men’s club-sponsored “virtual” drinks with friends.

The groups discovered this is a great way for everyone to see each other and catch up while still maintaining social distancing. There is no cost, no RSVP, and everyone brings their own favorite beverage. For more information, go to  http://www.nanuethc.org/ .

Congregation Sons of Israel in Nyack shul continues a series on women of valor, led by Judith Rose, through July 22. 1:30 p.m. For Zoom link: Helaine at (845) 358-3767 or csioffice@optonline.net.

Knocking the symbols of hate from their pedestals

The statues are finally coming down. Across this nation, 155 years after the end of the Civil War, the symbols of the Confederacy are being vanquished.

Since Memorial Day, when George Floyd gasped his last breath under the knee of a Minneapolis police office, at least 20 Confederate monuments have been removed. Some literally have been knocked off their pedestal by protestors. Others came down at the hands of local officials finally embarrassed by what they represent or fearful of more protest.
