A place where you don’t have to hide
An Orthodox parent of a gay son and a queer kid from Monsey talk about Eshel and its parents retreat

What do parents who live in a tight-knit community and love their children deeply, devotedly, with all their hearts and all their souls, do when they learn that there is something about one of their children that would put them at odds with community?
Not something that the child did, or even chose, but an inherent part of that child?
The last survivors and a new museum

Two weeks ago, on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, which many consider the beginning of the Holocaust, I stood under a chuppah, officiating at the wedding of my niece. She is the granddaughter of two Holocaust survivors, and though they are no longer living, their presence was palpable. The wedding, coming as it did on Kristallnacht, served as a fitting symbol of their resolve and dedication to build a Jewish home and perpetuate their family’s name and our people.
Rockland JFS group seeks volunteers

The outreach committee of Rockland Jewish Family Service, a not-for-profit, non-sectarian community benefit agency, is seeking volunteers. The RJFS’s mission is to strengthen the physical and emotional well-being of adults, children, and families. Volunteers and staff in the outreach committee work together to develop and implement outreach programs. Slick Club is a social group for adults with developmental disabilities and Send-A-Friend is a program to match homebound people with visitors to share a meal or read or chat together. Traditions is a holiday-based program for people with dementia.

For more information, call the RJFS office at (845) 354-2121.
Art therapy program in Monsey

The Alzheimer’s Association, Centers Health Care, Northern Services Group, and Rockland Jewish Family Service co-sponsor “Something for Alz: An Art Therapy Program.” It is an engaging art program for those with early and middle-stage dementia and their caregivers at Northern Metropolitan, a kosher rehab and nursing facility in Monsey.

The group continues to meet several times a month. The next session is December 5 at 10:30 a.m. Kosher snacks are provided and registration is required. Call Jeanne at (845) 354-2121, ext. 144.
