Happy Chinese Lantern Festival

On the 15th day of the first lunar month, the Chinese Lantern Festival ( Yuan Xiao Jie) is celebrated. It marks the first full moon of the new lunar year.

Lighting and appreciating lanterns is the main activity of Yuan Xiao Jie. Lighting lanterns symbolize "illuminating the future". It is a way for people to pray that they will have smooth futures and to express their best wishes for their families.

Jiaozi Making to Celebrate Lunar New Year

& Helping Our Neighbor in Need!

On January 31, UCA WAVES had the privilege of hosting an incredible Jiaozi ( Dumpling ) Luncheon & Fundraiser, bringing our community together in the spirit of Lunar New Year! What a fantastic way to celebrate—sharing delicious Chinese food, making dumplings, enjoying beautiful performances, and most importantly, donating to support a family in need.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us, including Rep. Maria Cervania (WAVES board member), Morrisville Mayor TJ Cawley, James Miller and Jennifer Meade from Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services, Michelle Barrett, Program Manager – Seniors and Aging, and Gail Pruett from NAMI NC, Reid Bowman from NAMI Wake, Tanyetta Sutton from Wake County School District, Jenn Sanford from Karen Farm, Manoj Pandya from Hindu Society of North Carolina (HSNC), Ruby Brown-HerringThava Mahadevan & Dr. Derrick Hoover from Clinical Scholar Alumni with Kathy, Jianping Yang from  Chinese American Friendship Association (CAFA), Bernard Hsu from Triangle Community Foundation, Shuyun Mu from MOVE NC, Alice Yu from Cantonese Association, Claire Chen from Chapel Hill Seymour Center and many more friends.

With over 40+ guests, we celebrated through paper-cutting art, stunning performances like the Chinese Tai Chi Sword Dance, and the shared joy of giving. Through the incredible generosity of our friends, we raised $6,070 ($5,500 check + $570 cash) for the Karen refugee family. When the check was presented to the father’s sister-in-law, she was overcome with emotion, deeply touched by the kindness of our community. She later passed it on to the family, ensuring they receive the help they need during this difficult time.

The fundraising drive will continue until February 27—if your heart desires, please consider continuing to support this family. Let’s keep love at the center of everything we do!

Update on Documentary Film Silent War

Supported by WAVES, Award-winning documentary filmmaker Professor Changfu Chang and his devoted team continued working on Silent War, a documentary shedding light on the mental health crisis in the Asian American community. The Silent War team traveled across the world in the past four years to film, giving Asian Americans a space to tell their stories.

Now, Changfu and his team are wrapping up the production part of Silent War. Changfu told us:" Recently, I conducted three interviews: President of Sikhs of America; President of Muslims of America; Mental health expert and a trauma specialist. All are good interviews, although I will use one or two sound bites from each interview. And finally, we got a few shots of Sandy at the bar. This scene is very important for a powerful message in the doc..."

Mental Health First Aid Training Monthly Update

The Mental Health First Aid Training Program aims to educate community members about mental health and boost their ability to prevent or handle crises, allowing them to become "mental health guardians" for themselves and their loved ones.

Managed by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, this certification course equips attendees with skills to recognize and respond to crises and substance abuse symptoms. Successful participants earn a globally recognized "MHFA Certificate".

In 2024, we are proud to announce that 421 individuals have successfully completed the training! Congratulations to all our participants!

In-person MHFA Training in NCCU

On January 24, 18 NCCU Nursing students and one new faculty member completed the Adult Mental Health First Aid Training, led by our dedicated faculty, Dr. Sujaya and Dr. Cohen. These participants successfully finished both the pre-course and in-person sessions, making them eligible for certification. This vital training equips future healthcare professionals with the skills to better support mental well-being in our communities.

To add some festive cheer, WAVES Executive Director Lily Chen shared a bit of Lunar New Year love with red envelopes, oranges, chocolates, and bagels! 🍊🍫 While bagels might not be a traditional symbol, their round shape (圆满) represents completeness and good fortune—making them the perfect fit!
