Jim Tressel: A Great Football Coach,

But Not Ohio’s Next Governor

Jim Tressel is widely regarded as one of Ohio's greatest football coaches. During his tenure as head coach at Ohio State University, he achieved an impressive record, defeating rival Michigan in nine out of ten matchups. In 2002, he led the Buckeyes to a national championship, cementing his legacy in college football history. His coaching record and leadership on the field make him one of the most celebrated figures in Ohio State athletics.

However, excellence in football does not automatically equate to excellence in government leadership.

Ohio Value Voters has raised concerns regarding Tressel's political stance, particularly his support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives during his time as president of Youngstown State University.

Ohio Value Voters has learned that Jim Tressel was a proponent of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) while he was president at Youngstown State University.

Breitbart News shared the video in this article from March of 2025. Ohio Jim Tressel Promoted DEI as Pres. of Youngstown State University

Senate Bill 1, a bill sponsored by Senator Jerry Cirino to prohibit DEI programs in higher education, passed the House and Senate earlier this year. The bill was signed by the governor on March 28, 2025. It was interesting to see Jim Tressel in the photo of the bill's signing with state lawmakers.

Jim Tressel is at the far right in the proto.

It appears that Jim Tressel was for DEI before he was against it.

When did he change his position on this issue? Or, has he? Or, is his presence at the bill signing indicative of political opportunism?

John Stover, President of Ohio Value Voters, states, “Ohio requires new leadership in the governor’s office that will not have a “situational mentality” on the issues facing our state. It is for this reason that we have endorsed Vivek Ramaswamy for Governor.” Link to endorsement.
