Politics can be a chafing, exhausting, disconnected, fracturing, and at times, flat out corrupt. These days, politics divide us more than unite us. Even the most dedicated citizen can begin to develop a sense of hopelessness when the government is misbehaving, or refusing to do what is in the best interest of its constituents or the greater good of the democracy. But rather than write it off as a bad investment, or something that you cannot change, it’s critical to do just the opposite – become an informed and active citizen, and ensure that your voice is being heard. In the United States, we are lucky to live in a country that empowers and encourages its citizens to be involved. Consequently, whatever your perspective, make your voice heard and answer the call to be a steward of your community and our shared American way.
You and your neighbors may share some values, but it’s unlikely that your priorities will line up exactly. And so you can’t count on them to cast their votes for measures that will improve your way of life, or shore up values that you hold in the highest regard. As Americans, we have the right to vote exactly as our priorities or core values tell us, and that is a gift that shouldn’t be thrown away. Bemoaning the ineffectiveness of an administration, or complaining about the way a situation is being handled is all good and well, but it’s unproductive (and likely unsatisfying) unless it is done through formal means of communicating with your elected representatives, participating in the electoral process and ultimately casting your vote. Rather than wallowing in self-indulgent pity and hopelessness, I encourage you all to take action to try to change the things you disagree with. The result will be a happier and more proactive you, especially if you manage to see any progress.
In my professional career, I have found that becoming politically active has allowed me to connect with community members I may not have otherwise engaged with. From local, to state, to national issues, I encourage you all to find groups of people that share a goal common to yours and work towards it together. You’ll be stronger in a group, and you may find more success and personal fulfillment with the political process. Active and engaged constituents keeps politicians focused and honest. If politicians weren’t responsible to their constituents, the result would be a collection of people wielding far too much power and working for their own benefit. Asking the tough questions and demanding answers forces politicians to answer honestly and behave in the manner we expect of our leaders. Transparency and constituent discourse are important elements in earning trust with the voters. If politicians don’t recognize this, they are in the wrong business and your vote should prove that to them.
Lastly, I fully subscribe to the philosophy that if you are not engaged in the political process, you don’t get to complain about it. Maybe your vote or voice will make the difference- maybe it won’t- but either way, you have to be involved in the process to get to complain about the results. My whole life has been focused on a single life viewpoint that there are no problems, only solutions. Governance in this city, this state and this country is challenged by many problems. The question for you to ask is whether you want to be part of the problem or part of the solution?

It’s pretty fair to assume that we don't need a reason to eat a pie. But if there's any hesitation, we couldn't think of a better time to eat pie than on Pi(e) Day. This celebratory day was started in 1988 by Larry Shaw to honor Pi, the mathematical constant that is written as 3.14. If it's been awhile since your last geometry lesson, pi marks the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — It’s only fitting that our edible interpretation of the formula be in the form of a round dessert.

To show our team and community support, we sponsored the NOL Little League scoreboard. Charlie Jimerson is one of the coaches and his
son, Ford, is a member of the tee ball team. The team has that pitcher to first base throw mastered, but isn’t exactly turning two yet. There is still a bit of infield sandcastling and outfield flower picking going on, despite the pushups and windsprints Coach Jimerson has implemented. We wish all the NOL teams a great season!
