Happy Holidays to you, our incredible Rotarians! Thank you for making this season so bright - at home, in our communities and far beyond! Whether busy organizing spectacular Christmas lights displays, fun-spirited Santa Run events, Salvation Army bell ringing, kids Christmas/holiday parties, special meal baskets for families, community dinners, special entertainment, sharing cards and gifts that brighten lives, selling wreaths & poinsettias, or just plain celebrating - this is a most special time of the year for us!
Because Rotary is so deeply invested in our communities, our impact is always significant! Everything done with LOVE in our Hearts makes life better, brings peace and prosperity, and all kinds of benefits we may never see. We'll always get more of what we're looking for. 11 Rotarians Become Certified in
Mental Health First Aid!
| |
Sue Germann, member Coldwater Rotary and D6360 Mental Health Committee, has made Mental Health First Aid Certification Training available to Rotarians. Two zoom trainings were held in late November and early December through Pines Behavioral Health Institute. Congratulations to these members who received certification:
Deidre Fields – Benton Harbor Sunrise Rotary
John Cunningham - Climax Rotary
Kathy Merrill – Coldwater Township Sunrise Rotary
Megan Lavell – Hastings Rotary
Michelle Skedgell – Hastings Rotary
AG Jim Maier – Lakeshore Rotary
Kirstin Rossman – Lakeshore Rotary
Leslie Behm - Mason Rotary
Melody Bennett – Mason Rotary
John Mellein – South Haven Rotary

Mental Health First Aid Training is a six-hour, intensive certification program that also requires completion of two hours of pre-work before even taking the training. Becoming certified in Mental Health First Aid allows you to be more aware of adverse mental health conditions in others, enables you to speak about what you see, and equips you to take action using the resources that you learn.
All of this is in line with RI President Gordon McInally’s mental health stand to Raise Awareness; Break Stigma; and Improve Access.
More Mental Health First Aid trainings are being scheduled in 2024. If you are interested in knowing dates and registering, please contact: Michaela, Pines Behavioral Health Institute - mtorrescamargo@pinesbhs.org
If you would like to participate in further mental health awareness/service projects, feel free to:
- Follow Rotary Action Group for Mental Health on fb: Facebook
- Explore the Rotary Mental Health Toolkit: Toolkits - Mental Health Initiatives Rotary Action Group (ragonmentalhealth.org)
- Ask D6360 MH Committee to send a speaker to your club. Contact: Leslie Behm, leslie.behm@gmail.com

Rotary Youth Exchange is one of Rotary's most popular programs to promote international understanding and develop lifelong friendships. It began in 1927 with the Rotary Club of Nice, France. In 1939 an extensive Youth Exchange was created between California and Latin America. Since then the program has expanded around the world. In recent years more than 7,000 young people have participated annually in Rotarysponsored exchange programs.
The values of Youth Exchange are experienced not only by the high school-age students involved but also by the host families, sponsoring clubs, receiving high schools and the entire community Youth Exchange participants usually provide their fellow students in their host schools with excellent opportunities to learn about customs, languages, traditions and family life in another country. Youth Exchange offers young people interesting opportunities and rich experiences to see another part of the world. Students usually spend a full academic year abroad, although some clubs and districts sponsor short term exchanges of several weeks or months.
Approximately 36 percent of Rotary Youth Exchange students are hosted or sent by the clubs in the United States and Canada. European countries account for about 40 percent, and 12 percent come from Australia an New Zealand. Asian clubs sponsor 5 percent, and 7 percent come from Latin American countries. Over 70 percent of all Rotary districts participate i Youth Exchange activities.
Youth Exchange is a highly recommended program for all Rotary clubs as a practical activity for the enhancement of international understanding and goodwill.

Let The Sun Shine
Solar Energy Project at school in Antalya-Olimpos, Turkey
| |
Climate Change and Energy Crisis are threatening our planet. Solar energy, being renewable source of energy, installation of solar panels on roof top of a school with 1700 students seems to be one of the ways to reduce carbon emissions and save energy. Solar projects must focus on reduced energy consumption, reduced pollution or emissions, increased energy efficiency.
Additionally, the project site is an apt place with reference to current energy sources (natural gas ), storage systems and usage as a result of which the project solution fits a demonstrated environmental needs. It will also set a precedent not only schools in Antalya but also those situated all along the red climate zone of the Mediterranean. The sun is a free, clean, and consistent source of power that has been producing energy for billions of years. It is high time we benefited from THE SUN.

JDEI (Justice, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) Corner | |
Sometimes Rotarians think about JDEI issues solely in terms of diversity headcounts of who is in the room. This is important, of course, as most clubs are striving to increase membership and better reflect the pluralistic communities that they serve. This diversity count might focus on race, but thinking about diversity in terms of gender, socio-economic status, religion, age, language, politics, and/or experience, just to name a few categories, are also important. We invite you all to think carefully about the rituals and habits of your club to ensure that you are as intentionally as inclusive and inviting as possible. Think about where you meet, how much membership costs, beginning meeting rituals/habits, who is empowered in your club, the types and varieties of speakers who are invited. You may find that some slight adjustments, or even the open willingness to have a discussion, will help your club to be more inclusive which, in turn, usually leads to increased membership.
In a related vein, some clubs have adopted a question as part of the standard process for considering proposals for new activities or projects. In addition to thinking if the proposal fits a club’s mission or strategic plan, the following question is posed: “Have multiple perspectives been considered when deciding to focus our club’s time, energy and talent to this project?” For example, if a hospital was being built but the only stakeholders interviewed were 80 years old or above then the new hospital might have a wonderful geriatric wing but no maternity ward. One narrative rarely does justice to the story. We invite you to consider multiple perspective when planning projects and posit that as a result there will be a greater potential for profound impact.
Please don’t hesitate to contact your district JDEI co-chairs if we can be of help to consult or visit your club: Raj Wiener at raj@ricandraj.com or Tom Rosenbluth at tdrosenbluth@gmail.com.
