Powerwalk with Penny through the Emergency Communication Center
The Johnson County Emergency Communications Center serves an area of approximately 550 square miles in Johnson and Miami counties. ECC staff, who are part of the Department of Emergency Services, dispatch more than 40,000 9-1-1 calls per year to Fire and Emergency Medical Services for fourteen departments.

Many employees have never been in the County Communication Center on the Sunset Campus in Olathe where this life-saving service is delivered. During the next Powerwalk with Penny, you can take a virtual tour of the ECC and learn about this important service the county provides, and what it is like to work there. Please join us on Zoom at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29 at the Zoom link below.

Juneteenth 2022 wrap-up
Thank you to all of the employees who worked so hard on all of the county’s Juneteenth events and programs. Participants included the VIBE Advisory Team, Johnson County Library, Johnson County Park and Recreation District, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and the County Manager’s Office. We appreciate the support from our county leadership and thank those who attended a Juneteenth event or observed the holiday in whatever way was meaningful to you.

You can learn about several efforts held to honor Juneteenth at jocogov.org/Juneteenth. Check out this video taken at the Sunday afternoon observance at the Johnson County Square

Participate in Feed the Need through the end of June
The final weigh-in of food donations for the 2022 Feed the Need campaign is only a week away.

As of the end of May, we’ve collected 3,820 pounds of food. If each county employee donates one pound of food through their office/department this month, that collection total would more than double.

Each dollar donation can purchase four pounds of food. Any size donation is welcome in reaching our June goal, and you have until Thursday, June 30 to donate.

The final weigh-in is June 30 at 9 a.m. at the Sunset Office Building.

In addition, you have until June 28 to enter the Department of Corrections’ outdoor package giveaway, with proceeds going toward Feed the Need.

The Feed the Need campaign benefits seven local food pantries. Learn more and find a list of suggested food donations.
Deadline approaching to earn 2023 incentives
Don't miss your chance to save money on your health insurance! Employees and spouses that are enrolled in the county’s medical plan and that participate in the County Wellness Program can save up to $1,800 on their medical contributions in 2023.

The deadline to earn 100 points by completing wellness activities and earn the wellness incentive is July 31. The deadline to declare tobacco in Oracle and complete the tobacco cessation courses (if applicable) to earn the tobacco incentive is also July 31.

Today's Board of County Commissioners meeting included the following:

  • Authorized the Mental Health Department to add 4.0 FTE case manager positions for the 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and authorized the reallocation and expenditure of fund balance (reserves) for FY 2022 in an amount not to exceed $170,000.

  • Authorized the publication of the Proposed FY 2023 Budget for Johnson County Government; setting the maximum budget at $1,651,649,184, comprised of $1,162,881,734 in expenditures and $488,767,450 in reserves; and notifying the county clerk of the proposed intent to exceed the revenue neutral rate and setting a public hearing on the proposed budget at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, in the Board Chambers.

County Manager Penny Postoak Ferguson introduced Tom Franzen, TTV director and county treasurer, and Amy Meeker-Berg, county clerk and register of deeds, to explain plans in early August to mail Johnson County property owners an estimated tax notice on behalf of taxing subdivisions. The informational notice is not a tax bill. State statute requires county clerks in Kansas to send residents notification of the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR) compared to the proposed rate for the upcoming budget for each taxing subdivision. In order to exceed the RNR for the upcoming budget, taxing subdivisions must first hold a public hearing and pass a resolution. Johnson County’s hearing is scheduled at 6 p.m. Aug. 22. The estimated tax notice will include details of public hearings taking place for taxing subdivisions that plan to exceed the RNR. In addition to the required notification, the county is implementing a communication plan, accessible here, that includes a dedicated webpage, jocogov.org/EstimatedTaxNotice
