Grow Johnson County partnership returns for the summer
Garden fresh produce will once again be provided to our clients this summer thanks to all the hard work and efforts made by Grow Johnson County. Weekly distribution will begin in June. Our Meals on Wheels clients really enjoy receiving the wide variety of fresh vegetables that are delivered each week. Last year, Grow Johnson County provided over 1,600 pounds of produce for our clients! Jim (pictured right) was one of our volunteers who went out to the farm and picked the produce up.
#BetterTogether: Realtors beautify clients' homes
Keller Williams Realty sent many volunteers to Johnson County on May 13th to do yard work for Elder Services Meals on Wheels clients. This is what a couple of our clients had to say:

“It was awesome! There were 11 volunteers that came and I was told they were going to spend one hour working in my yard. They really worked hard that entire hour. I had underbrush growing around our air conditioner that was cleaned out. There were also some little trees that were growing that they cut down. They cleaned the flower beds, trimmed some bushes, picked up and bundled sticks from the yard and did some raking. The yard waste was put into bags and set by the curb for pickup by the city on Friday. Our yard looks so much better. It’s not something that I could have done.”  -----Joyce

“Jeepers, there were 7 vehicles that parked in the street and my driveway and then all these people in red shirts walked up to the house. The team leader asked what I would like to have done and they immediately got to work. There was debris left from the derecho including a branch that had broken off one of my trees and they were even prepared for that…they came with a chainsaw! They filled 4 ½ trash cans full plus filled several paper yard bags full of storm debris. They cleaned underneath the bushes, trimmed them and cleaned out my flower bed. They were all so friendly and kind. I just don’t have the strength and mobility to do that kind of yard work anymore. I am so appreciative for what they did.” ----Marjorie

Thank you, Keller Williams! You make a difference in the lives of our clients!
Client Cameo: Marlene
Marlene began Meals on Wheels services about 3 years ago after returning home from the hospital having suffered a heart attack. She continues to have multiple medical problems. This is what she says about Meals on Wheels and Elder Services:

“Meals on Wheels has been so helpful…it provides me with more nutritious food than what I can afford to buy and it comes already prepared so I don’t have to cook which would be difficult for me. It has literally been a lifesaver.

These last 14 months have been particularly difficult during the pandemic. Elder Services connected me with 3 different volunteers that have each consistently called me once a week every week in addition to having 2 volunteers deliver meals once a week and care packages once a week. Those calls and deliveries have meant the world to me – literally, I felt it saved my life. I’ve been so isolated and each one of them takes a personal interest and express real concern. There is nothing I can say or do that can really express my appreciation for all they do.” ----Marlene
