Johnson County Allocates Additional Funds to SLFRF-Backed Pilot Programs

Three county programs developed with federal Coronavirus funds received an additional boost in funding to help qualified community members with affordable housing, child care licensing and rental assistance.

On Thursday, Jan. 18, the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners approved $950,000 in allocations from the interest accrued on the county’s Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds. The United States Department of the Treasury, directed by the U.S. Congress, distributed these funds to cities, counties and other governmental bodies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds were intended to offset economic losses from the pandemic and to invest in community infrastructure.

“These federal dollars have allowed our organization to pilot new and innovative ways to support those in our community who can benefit from some additional assistance,” said BOCC Chairman Mike Kelly. “At the same time we have been good stewards of these resources, ensuring they are being used strategically to improve the quality of life for our constituents.”

New Merriam Plaza Library to Open March 20

Photo of the new Merriam Library

Merriam Plaza Library, the newest Johnson County Library branch, will officially open on March 20, 2024. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. that morning.

The Merriam Plaza Library (6120 Slater St., Merriam) is co-located on a shared campus with the Merriam Community Center. It was designed with input from the community at several public engagement sessions, and construction began in late 2022.

The new facility replaces the Antioch Library branch, which opened in 1956 as the Library system's first official location. Antioch Library permanently closed on Jan. 29, 2024 to transfer materials--including more than 67,000 Library items--and equipment around the corner to the new building. Library users are encouraged to visit one of the Library's other 13 locations during the transition period for returns, access to the collection, and public computers.

A photo of a woman handing another woman a bag of groceries

Last year, Johnson County Aging and Human Services began a partnership with DoorDash’s Project DASH, which is helping deliver meals to homebound seniors throughout Johnson County.

The partnership began to address a growing waitlist of aging adults and cover underserved meal routes in the Home-Delivered Meals program. The program provides home-delivered meals to homebound residents and their spouses ages 60 and older.

When a Home-Delivered Meals route becomes full, a client in the program is offered a Project DASH route – a frozen meal delivered to their door. Since the partnership began in July 2023, dashers have delivered more than 400 orders. Currently, 14 clients are receiving meals through the partnership.
