Things That Interest Me...and Maybe You (Part 1)
Cool Event Ideas From September 2023
My favorite is the Make Way for Ducklings because I love that sculpture in the Boston Public Garden. If you have never seen all the pictures of them look them up---there is even a book with photos that shows so much creativity.
The Golden Bachelor
I do not watch The Bachelor but I am very aware that some of you do! Look at how they created an experiential campaign to bring attention to the new show.
Such a Disconnect with Tragedy
Anywhere in the world is more than a tourist destination….
This article reminded me of other things I have seen, heard, and experienced where people are forgetting where they are is more than a place to get a photo op and say they have been there. One that hits me is the first time I went to the 9/11 Memorial in NYC. I had avoided it for over 15 years, the site, and the new memorial. I lived 30 miles away in NJ when it happened. So many things stay vivid in my mind including people I knew who lost friends and family. That site for many, is the only resting place of their loved one.
As I stood there trying to get my emotions in some kind of order, I saw hundreds of tourists walking, sitting, eating, and posing for pictures. Not respectful pictures in many cases, but more like they were doing a fashion shoot. They asked that people not put bags, purses, etc. on the names that wind around the water. I will admit I did not think of how that was disrespectful, but I certainly would not set one on a gravestone. I talked to one of the volunteers and he told me how hard it was for all of them to watch people act like they were at an amusement park---climbing on things, trying to get to the water----and yes, the photos. They were allowed to ask people to stop, but not take action.
This reminds me also of all the world sites that have been desecrated in the past few years--- and people have posted videos and pictures to show themselves carving their name into something thousands of years old.
Again, anywhere in the world is more than a tourist destination. It’s someone’s home with history, culture, memories, and stories. What if it was our home and our family?
Skip Maui if you’re going to do this. Some tourists ignore impact of recent tragedy. USA Today
