The Landing School Newsletter | |
Friends and Family of The Landing School,
Students and faculty have arrived back on campus from a much deserved spring break and all of the shops are humming with activity. We are getting just a hint of spring and students can get a peek of the finish line…. it’s out there somewhere! Marine Systems shop doors are open more frequently as boats go back together, Yacht Design students have completed the Pilot Boat project and now can focus on their individual projects, and in Wooden Boat, the Town Class sailboat look like real boats.
Speaking of the Town Class boats, now is your opportunity to own a future Landing School heirloom. These boats are great family day sailors for lakes or coastal water (I should know, I learned to sail on one on Penobscot Bay). Plus, there is still time to choose your own color!
I hope you are enjoying the milder weather, please stop by the school for a visit anytime. I’d love to show you around.
Sincerely,

Marine Systems
In Marine Systems, students are busy getting their hands dirty on the project boats and learning how to problem solve as they wait for parts to come in! Longer, lighter days and the hint of spring in the air means we’ve been able to work with the shop doors open. This year there are twice as many project boats as last year, and a wider and more varied list of tasks to be completed.
However, it's not all hand work, as the Marine Systems American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) Certification Exam is only a couple of weeks away. This is an open-book exam, yet since it is timed, students have to have a strong grasp of the curriculum in order to pass it. The list of topics covered is impressive – from electrical theory, to potable water systems, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, the use of various types of pumps, steering and engine control systems….and much more. The students are scheduled to take the Exam in early April, after several days of review. As they prepare for it, please wish them luck!

Wooden Boat Building
After returning from Spring break, the wooden boat builders are back to work on Town Class hulls #432 & #433. Now that the decks are on, glassed, fair and ready for paint, the crews are fabricating parts. Seats, floorboards, breast hooks, toe rails, masts & booms are in process and the crews are making decisions based on both the science and the art of boat building. For instance, making sure that the sweep of the slatted seats is pleasing to the eye as it sits below the carlin/ coaming vs. depending solely on the offset dimensions from the centerline. The numbers are important, but, at times, the aesthetics take precedent. Deck hardware and rigging is in house or on its way, so it won’t be long before lines are being spliced and hardware is hanging from spars. With only 7 ½ weeks (+ or -) to go before our anticipated launch day, the crews are getting excited about seeing their boat make her first splash in Sebago Lake.
The Jimmy Steele Peapod project has begun, bottom seams have been reefed, the keel is ready to be refastened, and the steam box is being readied for bending new frames. What a pleasure it is to see such enthusiastic students gaining skills and producing such fine looking vessels. Stay tuned for our launch day announcement and join us as the students sail their new Town Class Sloops.

Yacht Design
Students in yacht design are currently finishing up with the Pilot Boat Project. As the students returned from Spring Break, they started working on their final projects.
This is an exciting time of year as the design students can put everything they have learned up to this point into a project of their own choosing, whether it's a sailboat or a powerboat. We encourage the students to follow their passions and the projects which they have decided upon reflect that. The mood in Yacht Design is definitely very positive!
