Join Harlem Independent Living Center (HILC). For over thirty years, our team of individuals with disabilities has been dedicated to transforming lives. As a trusted resource in New York City and its surrounding area, HILC provides vital services including Information and Referral, Peer Counseling, Systems Advocacy, Independent Living Skills Training, and Transition Services. HILC is seeking an experienced fierce disability advocate who wants to lead our Youth Services Program. The successful candidate will demonstrate the highest ethical standards and operate with integrity and transparency in conducting the business of the organization.

 

The successful candidate will also provide support to help youth with disabilities to transition into independent adult life. Focus on developing community services, leadership, educational, independent living, and professional skills in disabled children and youth from all neighborhoods and communities. Although this position is vital to working with all youth, pre-, post-, or enrolled in secondary school, the goal is to also concentrate on youth who are not in school, as those are youth with limited or no access to services and support.

 

Our team includes skilled professionals, some of whom have disabilities or personal experience in assisting individuals with disabilities. HILC is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities, especially those in minority communities and their loved ones, by equipping them with the resources and knowledge needed to live independently.


Some Key Functions

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement youth development programs for the northern Manhattan and its surrounding area.
  • Develop a deep knowledge and understanding of local community resources for transition-age youth, such as cross-disability services providers and government and non-profit agencies.
  • Assist youth in developing life management and personal development skills.
  • Work closely with parents, volunteers, and community leaders.
  • Engage new participants and community partners through outreach efforts.
  •  Provided one-on-one and group-based services to youth.
  •  Meet with youth at least once a month to ensure that their goals and progress on meeting them are regularly assessed by the youth and adjusted as needed.
  • Actively support participants in pursuing employment by providing job readiness training to assist youth in obtaining and maintaining employment.
  • Work independently, schedule and manage personal workload, and recognize when the supervisor needs approval or support.
  • Complete thorough, accurate, and timely documentation for direct services with participants.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and work within the confines of HIPAA regulations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Independent Living Philosophy
  • Disability Rights knowledge
  • Associate/bachelor's degree
  • Knowledge of Center for Independent Living services and resources available
  • Experience with working with youth and children with disabilities and their families.
  • Solid computer and writing skills.
  • Experience with conducting needs assessment and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively with others.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Comfort with public speaking.
  • Vision and passion for the future Independent Living/Disability Rights Movement.
  • Personal experience with a disability preferred; EOE/ADA



Work Schedule and proposed renumeration: Up to 21 hours per week; $21 to $23 an hour depending on experience.


Work Location: HILC Offices in Central Harlem, NY
