IT Computer Wiz Kids
Fall 2015 Newsletter

"When I started IT Computer Wiz Kids, I was teaching the programs for free at schools. I started with paying my staff out of pocket, and now we are in 4 schools with over 100 kids weekly, with 7 instructors, 5 staff, and 3 community partnerships. It is our story, it is about how we began and how we are growing!"
Gerard Cooper - Founder and CEO
A Message From CEO Gerard Cooper:

Happy Holidays! Thank you all for your support over the last six years since we started IT Computer Wiz Kids. We can enjoy the holiday season knowing that IT Computer Wiz Kids has opened its doors to embrace new team members, staff, interns, ambassadors, and volunteers. I have been inspired and determined to build a community-based technology organization that is accessible to young people and their families in underserved communities in the DMV.

You can help in many ways including donating money, joining our team of amazing volunteers and ambassadors, or by applying for our job openings to help educate kids and guide them along their career paths. We will acknowledge your support on our website, via social media and in our seasonal newsletters.

December was a productive month for IT Computer Wiz Kids. We received a grant from th Diverse  City Fund to run the Help Desk Initiative in 2016. In addition, we were awarded a grant from Washington Gas (WGL) . Our generous sponsor, WGL, also hosted students from IT Computer Wiz Kids, Shaw Community Ministry, and other partner schools to watch the Wizards play the Lakers at the Verizon Center.

Community Spotlight

In 2015, we offered programs in four schools and we began running a lifeskills and technology training program for young people ages 14-24 at  Shaw  Community Ministry . In addition, our team participated in the Toys 2 Tots Expo, Activity Rocket's open house, Silver Spring's Makers Faire and in the USA Science & Engineering Festival!

We currently partner with Shaw Community Ministry, Paul Public Charter School, Howard Middle School and National Collegiate Prep.

This year, Gerard Cooper, IT Computer Wiz Kids' CEO and his team of volunteers and mentors were recognized by McKinley Tech High School for their efforts to get young people excited about learning technology, and for their contributions to expanding digital literacy in the District's disadvantaged communities.  Additionally, Gerard participated in the DC Connect Home community partners' workshop at the R.I.S.E. Microsoft Demonstration Center at St. Elizabeths East. He was able to talk one-on-one with Mayor Murial Bowser about the best solutions for providing disadvantaged families and individuals living in Wards 7 and 8 with greater access to broadband in their homes.

Please Support IT Computer Wiz Kids
We welcome your contributions to our upcoming Help Desk initiatives. Just like every drop in the ocean counts, every cent given to this organization provides our students with targeted technology education programs and work experience that will ensure their future success. We thank you in advance for your support.

We are seeking $5,000 for our upcoming three month Help Desk Initiative at Shaw Community Ministry beginning on Saturday, January 16, 2016 from 10:00 am-12:00 p.m. We will open our Help Desk Initiative with participants in Shaw Community Ministry's program running the help desk with support from volunteers and mentors.  Shaw Community Ministry offers evening courses for out-of-school youths ages 13-24 who learn about financial literacy and professional development from guest speakers.

Together we can make a difference today!
